Can't finish off Ad Avis

Hi,

I'm playing a fighter. After I run into Ad Avis' room, I escape from fighting the figurine and then knock one of the candles over. Ad Avis then transforms me into a saurus and I can't do anything about it. Am I missing something?

Finish Ad Avis off the wizard's way. That'll work. One of your spells can prevent that saurus thing.

LOL what if you can't cast spells? (but, luckily, I can).

Then the game wouldn't have made you solve it the wizard's way, but the fighter's way instead.

Oh thank you. Good software design!

Specifically, the fighter's way involves getting close to Ad Avis and pushing him over the edge while ducking lightning balls he throws at you. Since reversal would negate the threat of those lightning balls (breaking the challenge of the confrontation), the game forces a reversal-endowed fighter to do things the wizard's way.

Was it always like this or have you tweaked it?

Any character with Reversal had to do things the wizard's way in the original as well. You don't even go into battle mode against the gargoyle since a Fighter can't cast with the shield out. If you want to test it yourself, just have a Fighter suck a blue frog, use the Alt-H option, then teleport to the Ritual Chamber and see what happens.

On a whim, I tested the debug options for both versions by turning Reversal off before entering the ritual chamber, and then turning it back on once Ad Avis begins his assault. The AGDI version basically has Addy casting ad infinitum...at least until you run out of mana to keep restoring the Reversal spell. The Sierra original simply crashes with the typical Oops! message.
