Widescreen Support QFG2/etc games..

Hi.. i did some reading around on this issue but I could not for the life of me figure anything out. Playing qfg2 a few years ago I had a 'square' monitor but now I have a widescreen (as I'm sure most everyone does nowdays?) and obviously it stretches the screen making the graphics hideous.
I've tried all the diff resolutions but nothing really works. I've got an ATI card so changing the settings on its internal configuration does not work (as I read was one suggestion, but only a solution for nVidias)
I just played thru qfg1 in 'Dosbox' and in that prog i can totally get it set up to work. Adjusting the resolution and scaler settings it sets up perfectly. (with a widescreen)
so what can be done to get these games to display correctly? My ideal (max) resolution is 1440x900... the ONLY thing I've found that lets the game slightly work is to play it in a window... running hq3x 960x600 or hq2x 640x400. Further i can then use the windows magnifying glass to zoom in so that the window looks like it is full screen. This works, but when u move the mouse to the edge of the window, it scrolls and is really a pain. If there was simply a way to *lock* the mouse inside the qfg2 window like it does when in dosbox, this would help... but bleh.
any other solutions? why no widescreen support? i mean its all anyone has now... heh
