Post subject:  Widescreen Support QFG2/etc games..

Hi.. i did some reading around on this issue but I could not for the life of me figure anything out. Playing qfg2 a few years ago I had a 'square' monitor but now I have a widescreen (as I'm sure most everyone does nowdays?) and obviously it stretches the screen making the graphics hideous.

I've tried all the diff resolutions but nothing really works. I've got an ATI card so changing the settings on its internal configuration does not work (as I read was one suggestion, but only a solution for nVidias)

I just played thru qfg1 in 'Dosbox' and in that prog i can totally get it set up to work. Adjusting the resolution and scaler settings it sets up perfectly. (with a widescreen)

so what can be done to get these games to display correctly? My ideal (max) resolution is 1440x900... the ONLY thing I've found that lets the game slightly work is to play it in a window... running hq3x 960x600 or hq2x 640x400. Further i can then use the windows magnifying glass to zoom in so that the window looks like it is full screen. This works, but when u move the mouse to the edge of the window, it scrolls and is really a pain. If there was simply a way to *lock* the mouse inside the qfg2 window like it does when in dosbox, this would help... but bleh.

any other solutions? why no widescreen support? i mean its all anyone has now... heh

Try running the winsetup.exe program and check the "Side borders on widescreen monitors" box and the "Force Alternate Letterbox resolution" checkbox. Hopefully that should work.

Sorry for reviving an older thread, but I'm having the same problem described in the original post with the stretched image. Forcing the letterbox resolution does nothing, as while this does extend the resolution from a 16:10 ration to a 4:3 ratio, the games still displays as 16:10 and the extra pixels are just black bands on the top and bottom. I tried every possible combination of DirectX (DDraw5 and D3D9) and scalers (including no scaling), both windowed and full-screen, and no matter what I try the image always stretches. Of course the original game was also at 320x200 (and therefore 16:10) but it was "compressed" on the old 4:3 CRTs and was designed to look right at the latter ratio. Is there any way to force the 4:3 aspect ratio? and if that's what "force letterbox resolution" is supposed to do, is there any reason it wouldn't work on my system? I've seen the QFG2VGA trailer on youtube and in that the aspect ratio was definitely 4:3, so I know there must be some way to get it to work.

For the record I'm using v2.0, running on Windows 7 64-bit.

On a mostly unrelated note, is there a way to configure the game to use a MIDI synthesiser other than the Windows built-in softsynth (namely an external MIDI sound module)? That option doesn't appear in the setup program, and even though I've used a small hack to force Windows to treat the module as the default MIDI device (works for all other programs I've tried so far), selecting "Default MCI" or "Win32 MIDI mapper" makes AGS use the Windows softsynth in either case.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

QFG2 doesn't use MIDI at all. It has a digital music pack. There is no MIDI information in any AGDI games anymore since the early versions of KQ2+. Also, is there no "Side borders on widescreen monitors" box in winsetup?

There is, but apparently it does nothing... on my system anyway :(

What worked for me (though it depends on your video card and drivers) was to adjust the digital panel settings of my video card to maintain the aspect ratio of the game. This caused the video card to do the letterboxing thing on a widescreen monitor without having to mess with the game's settings. (though if you have an older model, you might not be able to change the setting, like in the pic below)
