Fight Khaveen with no shield?

In the original, being a fighter and encountering Khaveen without a shield (dropped it so I could use magic in a fight) meant instant death. Does the same hold true for the remake?

In the remake, it's not possible to drop the shield. You can put it in your storage chest in Shapeir in order to be able to use magic, but you then have to take it out again when you leave for Rasier. That means that you'll necessarily have the shield on you when you fight Khaveen.
