casting spells in combat

I'm feeling somewhat silly - but I can't seem to manage to cast spells during combat. I can't hit beans with my thrown spells before combat and then once I'm in the combat situation, the game doesn't let me get to the spell menu at all. What am I missing?

Hitting monster with spells/rocks before combat almost requires you to slide the game speed all the way down in the options menu.
During combat, you cast spells pressing some keys in your keyboard. The game manual tells you which key belongs to each spell. Plus, you can't cast spells if you are carrying a shield. Hope it helps!
