Combat Going Slow For No Reason

The rest of the game works fine. Without having changed any setting on the game or on my computer, the combat started going very slowly. It was fine one day, and super-slow the next. I know it runs faster on a 320x200 setting, but for a few years now, it has been running fine on the 640x400 setting, and when I attempt to change the setting, it tells me I can't load the older save. Please help.
