Stuck on the pirate ship

I've successfully completed the treasure hunt and am now back on the ship, with no clue what to do. The 2 new objects from the island don't seem to be good for anything, and the only other thing I can find is a broom. Have the feeling just standing around waiting won't give me back my stuff or get me anywhere. Any suggestions what I could try?

The ship will be heading past Daventry which is where you want to get off, so in the meantime, try to make yourself useful and avoid becoming shark bait. When the time is right, you'll have the opportunity to get your items back.

I'm about to leave as an eagle. Is there any use for the crow's nest area, other than a way to die while you're initially exploring the ship?
