so I completed more or less everything there is to do on land, but the pirate ship hasn't shown up yet. is it triggered by a specific time?

No, it appears when you're ready to go without getting into a dead end. If you've disposed of the wizard and completed all the spells needed to beat the game, the pirates will appear. The "understanding creatures" spell and "teleportation" spell are optional, but all the others are mandatory.

Wait a minute the teleportation spell is optional !!! I thought you need the teleportation stone to get past the snowman.
Now i am curious what other way is there to get past the snowman then?
