If you read the book you found, you should've got the answer.

Unless the book you found was the lever books in the wizard's study. If that is the case, look for a different book in a different library.

Reading the book is done by clicking the hand cursor on the book from the inventory view. It took me some time to figure this out, as I expected the eye icon would let me read the book.

In KQ6 you had to use the HAND cursor to read a book in Alexander's inventory; clicking the EYE on it just gave you a description of its title. So this isn't unprecedented.

I got the book from the other library, but for some reason the code doesn't work for the lab door.

Is this a glitch or am I doing something wrong?

I also encountered such a problem. What solved it for me was first pulling an incorrect lever and then entering the combination.
