What was the point? (pirate ship spoiler)

I wasn't allowed to leave the ship until I subdued the crew but that just meant putting them to sleep, I couldn't kill them or tie them up. They are just going to wake up and go back to pirating so why bother?

You aren't meant to smite their blight from the face of the earth or reform them in some way. You're just trying to escape. And the King's Quest games don't really condone violence as a habit. I guess the idea is that if you tried to escape without putting them to sleep they would catch you.
Just go with it. :P
