Unable to play KQ1, various configurations

I've been trying to run KQ1 for the last couple nights.  I've tried the following configurations, none of which is successful:

* In Windows XP unless I keep my mouse button clicked down and run in window mode the video does not update.

* In the AGS version for both Mac and Linux items do not go into the inventory.  The item is available for immediate use, but as soon as a second item is picked up the first one vanishes.

* ACDOS.EXE seems to have been discontinued and I have been unsuccessful finding somplace to download the old version from.

Are any of these fixable?

KQ2-VGA exhibits the same behavior for me under Windows XP, however the inventory problem seems to be cleared up on Linux and OS X.  

I wonder if putting a bogus item in the KQ1 inventory so it wasn't empty would fix the inventory problem in KQ1?

Is there any file I could edit to stick something in my inventory before playing?  Like the pebbles or something?
