How to load with Vista

#1 Post by Higlander48 » Fri Apr 13, 2007 4:49 pm

I can't get the game to run using Vista.  I am using a loaner PC loaded with Vista. (don't ask why!!)  When I try to run the game the screen flashes from desktop to black rapidly and then there is a message saying that it cannot set video mode.  I am a technical newbie and am stuck. Help! >:  >:  >:

Have you tried entering the game setup and setting the resolution to 640x400 instead of 320x200?

:) Thanks, that helped.  I can now run the game although I have to open it through the options file in the start menu. Sigh! My computer has virtual bandaids all over it!!

Loading KQ2VGA With Vista

#4 Post by VistaHomePrem_x86 » Fri Jun 15, 2007 2:32 am

When I try to load KQ2VGA with Vista I get the error message.

"Problem with shortcut".

"The item kqmenu.exe that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly.

Do you want to delete this shortcut?"

Why is this happening when I try to run the program?

Problems With Shortcuts

#5 Post by VistaHomePrem_x86 » Fri Jun 15, 2007 2:39 am

Plrasr note that I have not done anything with these files. I did not delete anything these error messages come up after running the program when the installer has installed them.

Are these programs unable to run in Vista x64 Editions?

VistaHomePrem_x86 can you play the games if you go into their directories and run the exe file? Their directories should be: 'C:\Program Files\Tierra\KQ1VGA' and 'C:\Program Files\Tierra\KQ2VGA'.

Your installer runs fine, but it did not even create a Tierra folder at all. It simply puts a broken link to a directory that does not exist.

Sounds like a problem when you installed it. Have you tried installing it again?

It Does Not Matter

#10 Post by VistaHomePrem_x86 » Fri Jun 15, 2007 10:15 pm

Well, that how the installer installs it. I didn't think this would work on Vista. It never worked on Vista x64 Edition. I got Infamous Adventutres KQ3 to work but not KQVGA or KQ2VGA. So they don't work on Vista. People should nknow that they must have XP for this to work.

I don't think it's a Vista issue. Lots of people have installed and run the KQ remakes perfectly on their Vista systems. It's gotta be something else.

Giving Up

#12 Post by VistaHomePrem_x86 » Sat Jun 16, 2007 3:27 am

Well it does not work for me. I am giving up. I got King's Quest 3 to work. That's something good at least.

By the images you sent me, it appears as though it didn't install correctly. It should have installed to C:\Program Files\Tierra\KQVGA\ but you don't show it. I'm assuming you didn't change the install directory as you were installing it? I could probably send you the files in a zip instead of the installer. It appears to be a problem related to the installation, rather than the running of the game.

Yeah, I just downloaded it to Vista and I'm having the exact same problems. I tried to uninstall it so I could start over on it but I only have the shortcuts, not the files in itself.

The only major difference in the architecture of IA's KQ3 and AGDI's KQ1/KQ2 is the installer. My advice would be to download AGDI's games from a third-party server, such as Underdogs or something similar, maybe that'll be different.

Abt Vista

#16 Post by VistaHomePrem_x86 » Mon Jun 25, 2007 12:16 am

I have noticed that both the Windows Live One Care firewall and UAC, User Account Control, which involves alternate clicking on the program icon and selecting run as administrator from the pop up menu that appears has solved some technical issues for me with Vista x86. World of Warcraft requires me to reset my firewall setting from restricted on my Windows Live One Care firewall to a lower setting recommended by Microsoft. Vista x86 resets firewall setting when you restart your computer the next time. I dunno if this solves anything. I thought these workarounds were at least worth mentioning. I've been using Vista since Dell sent it to me as an upgrade to Windows MCE 2005 with my new Dell PC in January 2007.

Fixed Problem

#17 Post by VistaHomePrem_x86 » Sat Jun 30, 2007 4:13 pm

Vista asks the user if they want to rerun the program as an administrator. You must say yes. It's just like right clicking the installer and selecting run as administrator. I am getting used to this new UAC setup on Vista. Ok it works.

KQ1VGA and KQ2VGA

#18 Post by VistaHomePrem_x86 » Sun Jul 08, 2007 2:47 pm

When I click on my Desktop icons I get this error message:

Adventure Game Studio

There was a problem initializing graphics mode 320x200 (15-bit).
(Problem: 'Can not set video mode')
Try to correct the problem, or seek help from the AGS homepage.

Possible cause, your graphics card drivers do not support this resolution. Run the game setup program and try the other resolution.

This means that your video card doesn't support 320x200 mode at 16-bit color.

Try changing the resolution to 640x400 in the winsetup.exe program and then running the game again.

Radeon X1300PRO 256MB Video RAM PCI Express Card In My PC

#20 Post by VistaHomePrem_x86 » Sun Jul 08, 2007 7:27 pm

Um guys I have a name brand video card in my Dell. It's an ATI Radeon X1300PRO with 256MB video memory. I have 1 GB syste memory. My video card is currently displaying 1280x1024 32-bit color, or 1280x1024 True Color Mode.

Vista x86 has two display options. (1) Medium 16-bit color. (2) Highest 32-bit color. Do I need to set my colors to 16-bit?

I've managed to get KQ2:RTS running successfully in Vista with the information people have posted on this thread (thanks!), but can't get the speech and voice packs to install properly.  I've tried running both installers under XP compatibility mode, and they claim to have installed the packs, but the files don't show up in the place they should and the voices/music are not present in the game.  Can anybody help me get this figured out?  Thanks!

After installing the add-on packs, there should be new files in the game directory called: Speech.vox and Music.vox.

You might want to do a search of your system and if, for some reason, they didn't get installed into the correct game directory, copy them there manually.

You may also have to run the winsetup.exe program after both .vox files are in the directory and ensure that the appropriate checkboxes are ticked to use digital music and speech.

Hmm, speech.vox and music.vox are now in the correct directory (Idid have to move them); the music now shows up, but the speech doesn't.  Both checkboxes are ticked when I run winsetup.exe.  Is there anything else I might be missing?

I played this game a couple of years ago and loved it--and part of what I loved was the way the voices enriched the characters. If I could get this working on my new machine, it would be fabulous.  Thank you!

Note that there's no speech for the narrator text.  Only the characters talk in the game.
