KQ3 Redux suddenly a 'security risk'?

#1 Post by shmoopie313 » Tue Mar 01, 2011 4:57 am

Sat down tonight to continue adventuring, but after three days of functional gameplay I can't start the program. When I try (I've used the shortcut and the direct launcher link in the program file) nothing happens for a minute and then Norton pops up saying "SONAR detected a security risk autorun.exe" and then it removes the risk but still won't let me play.

I landed safely on the shores of Daventry last night so I'd really like to avoid a reinstall if possible. Help?

King's Quest III: Redux has no autorun.exe file. Autorun is usually when you plug an external device such as a USB stick, maybe you try to load the game from a USB stick that has a virus, or something?

Are you using Norton Antivirus? I had this same problem.

A good workaround for Norton is this: Try to start KQ3 using the game launcher icon. When Norton tells you it's deleted the file, click on its message to get more details. Note down the path at which the KQ3 autorun.exe file is generated. This will probably be in a normally hidden subfolder, so go to your Windows Folder Options and select the option to "Show hidden files and folders."

Now bring up your Norton control panel. In my version, the submenu you need to access is Settings > Scans and Risks. Under the subheading Scan Exclusions, there should be a button that says Configure.

Click on it, and you'll bring up the Scan Exclusions dialog box. Under the area labeled Real Time Protection Exclusions, there should be a button saying Add... Start up KQ3 again. Then quickly click Add, find the location of the KQ3 autorun.exe, then select it and click OK. With luck, this should stop Norton from deleting the important file, and the game launcher will appear!

I also added the KQ3 autorun.exe file to my Scan Exclusions list (in the same dialog box as the Real Time Protection Exclusions) using much the same process, so you may need to do that as well.

The Launcher.exe file might be getting detected as a false positive.

If there's any way for you to submit the file to Norton or otherwise request them to look into it so that they can adjust this, it might help things.

Thank you so much for the ideas. I didn't get a chance to play again till last night, but it ran perfectly just like it should. Norton did its automatic scan a couple of days ago, so maybe it found it and fixed it on its own?

Regardless, princess and kingdom are saved.. though I missed one point.. and those awards are going to bug me until I get them all... :)
