KQ3 Speaking animations

#1 Post by oriel » Tue Mar 15, 2011 6:55 am

Hi,

I'm wondering if the speaking animations in KQ3 redux were prerendered for each talking sequence or calculated in real time and rendered that way.

What I noticed is that the mouth movements match what the characters say but in earlier games like QFG4 and Leisure Suit Larry 6 (for the most part) they don't.

Each speaking animation contains a specific set of frames, each frame tied to certain "phonemes" (sounds like "sss" or "ah") and each voice sample is accompanied by a file tied to that sample that contains information on what frame to play during what part of the sample. That's how lip syncing works in AGS.

The software aids in the timing, but the mouth movement is traditionally animated.
