Graphical Stuff

#1 Post by shoveit51 » Fri Aug 10, 2001 12:51 pm

Excelent game, But a couple of things look like direct rips from the old KQ1 remake...

First up, the snake in the tree looks like a 16 bit drawing, same as the sparks when the main character gets teleported in the witch's house, and when the leprachauns(Cant Spell) Disapear.
It may be an idea to fix em up... They stand out real bad when compared to the great looking backdrops.

Definitely a 5 star production

Actually, Sierra's EGA and VGA games both use exactly the same screen resolution (320x200 pixels) so the magical flashes, and the snake are really the same in both games. The only difference is that VGA allows for more colors and thus what appears to be a greater level of detail. So, I'll try to change that for the next version... or at least make the colors a little less vibrant.

Yes, I worked on quite a few of those spell effects, and it was very difficult to make them look just right. I tried making them with several colors, and mixing them together, but then it didn't really look magical, but rather like a runny cloud. I wanted the sparkles to still be quite noticable, and decided the only way to do that would be to just make pixilated diamond shaped sparkles. I also tried to use brighter colors to make them look magical, but perhaps we can play around with them and see if we can make them look better and more up do date. I guess we'll just have to do some trial and error in Photoshop and see if we can come up with a new look for the next version.

Anonymous Game Developer #1

with the spell effect,
Have you tried giving it a "fairy dust" like effect?
Where theres a lot of pixels to start with, which fade away as the animation plays... This would enable a multi-color, more vibrant looking, dissapearance. Rather than the old 16 color animation which looks slightly out of place (like the snake) <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Cant wait for the speech thingie...

I tried fixing this without having to make a new animation. What I've done is made the sparkly animation semi-transparent, so that it blends in with the background and doesn't look like an old 16 color animation any more.

For the witch, and graham dissapearing, I've now made 2 seperate animations for them, which both look better.

Oh yea and I fixed the snake to<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">
