How to prepare KQ1 to be burned on a CD-ROM ?
Hi,

Lemme start by saying this is one of the greatest fan games I've ever seen made ! Congrats !

I'd just looooooooooove to have this game on a CD, but I don't know how to do this correctly. Let me explain my problem:

When I extract all files of KQ1 + speech&music pacj into a single directory I get an autorun.inf, and even a startup screen, but it has no 'install' option. This option is required because the save games can't be saved on a ROM drive.

However, the game manual states that this option must exist. Installation instructions indicate me pressing 'install' from the autorun menu.

I guess that a special autorun menu with install function must exist somewhere, as the manual mentions it. However nothing of the sort can be found on the site. That's why I humbly ask you if you could please put the autorun menu with install option somewhere on the site.

Maybe my method of installing the files is wrong and there's a better way, then please let me know ...

Mulch

P.S. I don't really know whether this problem exists with KQ2VGA too, so ...

Member of the DirectFXP Team
Private @ Section One Fxp
Private @ 1337 Foundry
Private @ Graveyard FXP
Private @ WitchCraft FXP
Member of Shock FXP
Member of Acid, Holland, Extreme, Sci-fi, Star, Korrupt,
etc ...

Yeah, sorry. At first we were going to burn the game to some CDs, so we left the CD installer menu stuff in the manual. Later we gave up on that idea though and haven't taken that info out of the game manual. There's no CD launcher that exists in the game and with that version of KQ1VGA (a much older version of the AGS engine) it's not possible to run and play the game off of a CD.

In KQ1VGA 3.0, you may be able to do this, but in version2.0 it's unfortunatley not possible.

Oh, and thanks about the game too <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Maybe in the future you can script some autorun stuff in order to just run the installer off the CD? That way, we could burn the installer programs, along with the autorun.inf, etc. to a CD. I don't know how much work that would entail, but it might be cool.

Ah, well, that's a pity ..., So AGD#2, if I understand well, it's in the hands of the guys that make the AGS engine ? Well, then it's just waiting for the new release ...

Another Idea can be that you give us the possibility to also download the game as one huge exe. That way, all we burners have to do is download the all-in exe file and put that on a CD, along with a tiny autorun.inf. Can I download the games somewhere as big exe's ? Or can you pack it as one for me ? Or am I asking way too much again ? <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

Much obliged for the quick answer,
Mulch,
proud finisher of KQ1-7, SQ1-6, QG1-5, LSL1-7, LB1-2, GK1-3 etc

If you like, AGD#2, I can make a little installshield script that installs all (or part of the) files to the HD. It can work then ... It's been some time since I made an installshield installer script, but I managed then (required for a game I made myself) so I think I can manage now <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

Anathoth, there is already an autorun.inf and a menu available with the release, it only lacks an 'install' option <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /frown.gif ALT=":(">

Member of the DirectFXP Team
Private @ Section One Fxp
Private @ 1337 Foundry
Private @ Graveyard FXP
Private @ WitchCraft FXP
Member of Shock FXP
Member of Acid, Holland, Extreme, Sci-fi, Star, Korrupt,
etc ...

Oh, I didn't understand what you meant before, but I see now. Maybe someone could just use those files, rewritten to say "install" instead of "play". That way, you could just copy the install files to the disk, and use the autorun to run the installers. And then still play from the HD as normal.

of course, Anathoth ! For someone who has the code of the autorun menu (kq1menu.exe), it's easy to let in be copied to HD.

Even better, as the installer already does exist, but in three parts... If they make one big exefile instead of three for the CD-rom buffs to download, we have the perfect CD-ROM installer, only if we include a small autorun.inf file that says something like:
file=install.exe
icon=install.exe

and that's it.

Mulch

Member of the DirectFXP Team
Private @ Section One Fxp
Private @ 1337 Foundry
Private @ Graveyard FXP
Private @ WitchCraft FXP
Member of Shock FXP
Member of Acid, Holland, Extreme, Sci-fi, Star, Korrupt,
etc ...

There are plenty of menu program makers out there on the internet - I'm sure you could knock up an install program fairly easily which just ran each of the KQVGA installers in turn.

As for running the game off a CD, this is not supported by KQ1VGA v2.0, but should work with KQ2VGA and future versions of the games.

I hope......................................................
I hope to be able to have all of Tierra's games to play via CD.
The Knight

Hmmm...
I guess I'm the only one here who hates playing games from CD. If it's at all possible to play a game from my hard drive (even at the cost of several gigabytes of space), I'll do that. The small amount of disk space required by the Tierra remakes wouldn't be worth the effort of inserting the disk eacht ime I play...

I like the option of both, myself. And I whould'nt mind having to put the CD in just to play it.
The Knight

Yes, I would rather play the game off my hard disk of course. But that's not what I at least was talking about. I wanted to make an archival copy of the game on a CD, and just thought it would be a nice touch to have an autorun feature with the game, that's all.

I just whould like the feel of the game off a CD. It dosen't feel illegal or bootleged. It feels like an actual game I bought from the store.
Also, It's easier to take to other places.
The Knight
