technique for drawing grass and dirt

#1 Post by skyfire1 » Sat Mar 18, 2006 11:33 pm

one of the things that i like a lot about king's quest 1 & 2 vga is that the grass and dirt look so neat. what technique did agd use for drawing grass and dirt for king's quest 1 & 2 vga?

I think a lot of those textures actually originate from Sierra games.

Thats cool, but KQ2VGA+ is alot different to the original KQ2 so why not pretend its an entirely new adventure game and give it a try?

You never know, you may like it!

Using a clone tool in Photoshop, you create a layer of new grass by "cloning" and re-arranging areas of grassy patterns.  Try King's Quest V, VI and Conquests of The Longbow for source material.

Play Conquests of the Longbow

Take screenshots of ANY of the Sherwood Forest Scenes.

Play QFG1VGA - do the same.  Same for QFGIV.

This is one of the most helpful topics ever. I just played around with CoL and a background I designed in paint, here's how it looks now

the grass was just solid green and the sky was just solid blue before. I WAS going to texture them but boy does this look better.

Thanks a lot everyone!

edit: for reference, I know it needs a lot more work, but I'm happy with my 10 minute results. gotta get my buddies together and start working on this stuff hardcore.

Well, it's better for a group that get no income for the games they produce to get textures easily and cheaply.

no, its not better. they lose respect in the meantime. i dont really know what money has do to with it. none of us get any income for our games. i wondered why there was such a difference between portraits and backgrounds. i was under the impression they painted all textures themselves. but this is just my opinion. other people think its okay. no one is wrong.

When first starting out, reusing existing elements made production of the games easy and quick. I believe the AGD's also agree that reusing textures isn't as professional as when everything is made from scratch. To my knowledge, there are no reused textures anywhere in QFG2VGA. Some were used initially to get the backgrounds made, but were replaced with original artwork later in production. I guess you could consider it a growing process.
