King's Quest II SCI - Gameplay videos and new BGs

Little side project I'm working on in my spare time with SCI Studio when I can be bothered to work on it. The scripting is the hardest part. Gonna have to really find some tutorials or someone to help me understand that better. Here's a screenshot of the first screen in comparisson to the original. I tried to make it look as much like KQ1SCI as I could. It was a learning experience trying to figure out how to make those picture resources, but now I find it very efficient in the way it works. I like making them. I think I'll leave most of the scripting until last, though. Right now I'm sorta half working on the screen to the immediate right and a variation on KQ1SCI's title screen (with the only difference being a 2 instead of a one.

Watcha think? One thing I realize is that when I traced over the original image I didn't take into account that the new Graham sprite would be much larger than the old, so the beach and palm tree etc looks kinda small. I may work on that..

Again, since I can't upload pictures here I'm going to link to IA's forums...hope this is ok...only thing is you have to register to see images attached by members...I'm not really intending to plug IA's forums, I just want to show my pictures!  :\

Looks good! :)

But... How big is the need for KQ2 SCI when there is already KQ2VGA available? :rolleyes

Because not everyone wants to play a VGA remake of a Sierra game. And to be honest, I like the feel of the SCI games more than the VGA games (call me strange, but the VGA games didn't feel as polished as their SCI counterparts (i.e. I reckon QFG1SCI was better than QFG1VGA)). But that's just my honest opinion. And if you run it SCI games under FreeSCI, you can get some interesting filtering and anti-aliasing options (not that I've used it, but from some sample screens I've seen, they look splendid), something you can't get in VGA Sierra games. ;)

Anyway, this is very interesting. Keep at it MusicallyInspired! :D

Looks great! Are you as talented at creating PC Speaker music as you are midi music?

I never said there ever was a need. Like I said, I'm making this in my spare time as a hobby. I'm not doing it because the world wants/needs it. I also was interested in making a SQ2SCI game a while back but my graphics skills left much to be desired back then. And nature screens are easier to draw than space stations :\ .

In a way it's much easier. After I create the MIDI arrangements for Adlib/MT-32, all I need to do is pick which channels should be played for the PC Speaker version since it's all contained in the one sound file. I can also create them to support Tandy 3-voice ;).

Remaking KQ2 using the SCI studio is a great idea. The screenshot looks very cool, although the grass seems a bit off IMO.

Are you interested in creating a team or just going to be keeping it a one man job?

Best of luck with it. Looking forward to playing it :).

It's a 1:1 remake?

Yes it's 1:1, with the small exception of longer more in-depth introduction and epilogue much like KQ1SCI. And I wouldn't mind a helping hand or two. The scripting is the hardest part and I have only a small grasp of comprehension in programming. I think if I knew the language more it would be easier, but so far I'm sorta copying and pasting codes from tutorials. But I'm not neccessarily recruiting. This is being done in my spare time (which isn't as much as it used to be) and as a hobby. If someone wants to help that would be cool, but I have no real urgent need to go and find a team for it. If enough people want to help maybe we can make a website or something, but I'm not getting my hopes up for everyone to raise their hands anytime soon.

At most all I'd ask for is a little help in the scripting area. Tutorials are great, but I think I need some one-on-one time with a teacher in this area...

I'd be happy to build and host a website for you if you'd like.

Are SCI games made with a different program than the VGAs (AGS)? Because I think I know AGS pretty well, and I would love to help you work on the game if that's the program you're using. If it isn't, well... Good luck finding someone!

I assume he's using SCI Studio. There's some info about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCI_Studio.

There's no need to assume anything when you can just look at the first post in this thread ;).

Yes, I said in the first post that I was using SCI Studio, as Adeyke said. So, no, it's not AGS. Kinda tells you who just likes to pop in and look at the pictures rather than actually reading the posts! ;)

And thanks for the offer, Music Head, but I have a website myself with unlimited space and I can host it there if the time comes.

But hey, if some big group comes along (like say AGDI or IA) offering to host the game on their website then I'd relinquish control on website design/hosting to them. :D But I could take a wild guess right now on the chances of that happening without being too far off lol.

Hey man, you never know what could happen. It's not like picking up an independent guy's project and adding it under the umbrella of the rest of the company's not happened before. ;)

I guess I'll just have to keep showing it off the further along I go then :).

Erm... Any posibilities on making Space Quest 2 SCI when you finish it?

by MusicallyInspired
If I successfully finish KQ2SCI then most definitely. I originally tried to make an SQ2SCI remake a long while ago but my graphics ability sucked. It still isn't amazing, to be fair, but it's better. And then there's the complexity in the scripting. KQ2 is a far simpler game to script than SQ2 would be I think, being a simple treasure hunt. Ideally KQ1 might be even easier, but it's already done in SCI lol.

Little more progress (not much). Here's the second screen so far. I just finished the tree on the right today.

That's funny, I was just thinking about the possibility of doing something like this the other day. I think your work looks awesome, you definitely managed to capture the KQ1SCI 'look'. I look forward to playing it.

OT: New background is lookin' real good.  Can't wait to see it with grass.
