Quest for Glory I 2.5D Preview

I made a (VERY) quick web site (the IP link, no URL yet, follows). I ask that everyone please read my quick note, and the link to the game itself is on the bottom. By the amount of time I spent on this, it really doesn't feel that way, but at the end of the day it's very early on and not everything behaves perfectly. I've attached to this post an image of the screens you can see in my little preview. If anyone thinks they can and want to help me out with screens, or 3d models, or maybe music, please let me know. I'll be more than happy for the much-needed help.

EDIT: Scroll down for the new address and the bigger map (on the web site).

The requested object does not exist at the specified location. The link you followed is either outdated, inaccurate, or the server has been instructed not to let you have it.

Maybe I tried to download it too soon?

Doesn't work for me either.

Good start on my part, huh? :-) It was 4 AM when I posted the link. I just replaced it (on my page) with a mediafire link, so there should be no more problems. Sorry.

No, just a few months. Took out that line (it referred to a different page).

oh, ok. Nice work man! It runs in linux under wine for all us awesome linux users! I love it, though I really wanted to go inside. :p It's a bit slow, though, I think that can be fixed in the final version. But, I know this is a very small preview, so don't let is discourage you, it's amazing!

Thanks a lot. For Linux and MacOS X, I will make Jar files. That in itself will make it considerably faster.

Your screen backgrounds look beautiful man, i love the style you're doing this in. Bear in mind for me anyway, if i get one instance of 'can't do that yet' the whole game locks up and i have to close and reopen. Its also really hard to change to the next scene sometimes. But i see huge potential in this man. seriously.

Thanks a lot. I don't know about the "can't do that yet" crash, but I'll bet the screen-changing problem you're having is just a small matter of waiting a second or two. My image loader is not exactly lightning-fast. I'll work both on the loader itself later and on the compilation settings (memory-handling stuff), and I bet can shave a good deal of time off of that. But that's for later, when I have the whole thing drawn.

Yeah, it runs fine in WINE, but still, great~!

I found that if I right click, that seems to clear the screen. One gotcha I found was that if you click too close to the edge of the screen, the hero won't advance to the next one. I have to click back a bit to move.

hey man, do you want a mirror? I can host it on my server.

Thanks for the offer of a mirror, but I'm not getting nearly enough traffic to warrant a mirror. If the offer is still up by the time I'm finished with either the full game or at least a more advanced preview, then I may just take you up on it.

I'm going to take the download link down until hopefully just later tonight, at which point I hope to deliver a preview which includes the dialog tree implementation (with all of the sheriff's lines), two more screens (one of which a saved game at Erana's Peace) and the finished cursors for "look" and "use."

Thanks for the support, 123...0. Link is up again. Dialog tree was a little harder than I expected, but alas it is done. I didn't do the save file to Erana's yet, though. http://66.160.166.159

I was going to warn people that I had written the dialog tree, not a text box, but it was 6 am when I finished packaging the thing and forgot. So, be warned: the text splits after every 35th character regardless of where it is! Obviously I'll wok on that later, but it's not exactly my biggest priority.

Now that this is showing progress, I think this thread would be better on the game making forum.

I'm about to release a better and much more complete version (although most of it is behind-the-scenes engine stuff that players won't get to see on this release). But among other things, the saved game to Erana's as well as the centaur's screen will be included, and the hero will get to rest and throw rocks. Anyway, I was wondering whether people would strongly object to a synthesizer voicing all the lines (mutable through the game's control panel). I read Broomie's likely joking comment about Microsoft Sam on the other thread (about AGDI's QG2) and decided to ask.

Great news! Syntethized voices have the problem that they always sound silly, useful or not. Well, mostly, the syntethized voices from Vocaloid 2 were well done. Without listening to them I can't say, but in the worst case I probably won't mind if they can be turned off on the control panel. Can they be turned off also from outside of the game/main screen, too?

Will you mangle the palette on the centaur garden screen until you talk to him? :lol

Thanks for responding. From what I gather, it only matters if the voice is realistic. Since I'm making this game multi-platform, I can't count on any one voice and I was going to use a Java-based synthesizer with its own voice. Maybe I'll add it later, on a future release, especially if I figure out how to create a voice of my own.

Hey, everyone (and by "everyone" I must mean "Dr. Jones!"), the new release is here at last. Too many behind-the-scenes changes happened, but there's one's share of visible ones too, including the twice-promised saved games. Unfortunately the centaur isn't finished yet, so he won't be showing up, but his screen is in the preview. Hope everyone (again, Dr. Jones!) has something to say about it: http://www.agpgames.com/QuestforGlory.html

You tried it too soon. I had to move my file into mediafire's server again (but at least the web site looks prettier), but I'll make it downloadable via my web site later tonight. Get better, pal.

EDIT: Just so anyone doesn't misunderstand, the preview is downloadable now, it's just that from my website you click on the download link to get transferred into MediaFire's server, from which you get the file.
