Derek Yu, author of the terribly addictive game Spelunky, has put on his website a quite useful pixel art tutorial. I suggest reading the tutorial before playing the game because the other way around takes so damn long.

Derek Yu also made one of my favorite independent games ever, Eternal Daughter. You should give it a download, it's a brilliant game. Could have been a classic if it were released in the 16 bit days.
