Mystery House?

#1 Post by TowerofBabel » Tue Dec 30, 2003 8:33 pm

"You encounter an old abandoned Victorian mansion filled with interesting rooms and seven people. Suddenly, you find yourself locked in with no other option than to explore. Almost immediately, terrible events start happening as you encounter dead bodies scattered throughout this mysterious mansion. You eventually come to a sickening realization that either you find the murderer or the murderer finds you ..."

Sounds like a good game? Too bad the graphics are all stick figures! I was thinking how everyone wants AGDI to remake so many EGA and VGA games when here sits a true jewel, a game made public domain by Sierra due to its age and lack of eye candy. This game would be so wonderful with VGA graphics, sprites, and music. And it wouldn't be like Colonel's Bequest; that game was more weighed down by conversations and timed events than did it justice. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... lasses.gif ALT="8)">

Sounds like "Rose Red" in a way.

But an interesting idea for a game. I could see it working akin to the SNES version of CLOCK TOWER - a lack of enemies and richly detailed visuals would create an uneasy atmosphere. Thow in a classy, scary bad guy and yes, I could see it working.

But I couldn't see it working in any other way. Games with a lack of enemies and few characters really need to have a sense of urgency to them, so the plot has to be tight, and the atmosphere as dark as possible.

It's an interesting idea. I like it.

I don't think this is worth it. It sounds like it'll be too similar to '5 days a stranger' (A popular AGS game) but its up to u i guess.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /devil.gif ALT=":evil">

Does anyone know where I can find a PC playable version of Mystery House? IIRC, it was written for the Apple IIe. Is there an emulator or anything that will play it on a PC?

The Roberta Williams Anthology, in which you can find the game, ships with an Apple ][ emulator... Lemme just check... *finds RWA CD's, puts CD #1 in drive, open help file*... Well, it appears that it's just called Apple IIe Emulator. But the EXE's called Applewin.exe, so I'll assume that's another name... *searches for emulators* Aha! Download links are here.

And if you want the game, I've uploaded it here (140 KB). Don't you just love public domain? <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">
Pidgeot
-----
Every error you find is the last one.

Well the links you posted were dead, but I did my own search for the emulator and found it. Sadly, it wouldn't work on my computer. I blew the dust off my old 333 laptop and booted it up. The emulator works like a charm. It was laughable when they called the game "Hi-Res". My two year old could draw better graphics. I'm sure it was amazing in it's time though. The father of all adventure games...

Man... this game was made the same year I was born.

Maybe when I have time I'll play around with it and see if I can come up with an AGS version.

Well, didn't really bother checking the links, as I already had the emulator on the CD. For those of you that are interested, the game, emulator, walk-through, etc. can be found here.

There were adventure games before Mystery House. "Father of graphical adventure games" might be more accurate.

The father of all adventure games would be "Adventure", would it not? Zork after that?

This message brought to you by BTails

Yeah, it was "Adventure", ironically, it's the same game that inspired Roberta Williams to do Mystery House. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":b">
______________
Rules must be obeyed. Just downloaded it and had a quick play. Wow, what a terrible game, I'm sure it was state of the art back when it was released but it has aged badly. I thought Troll's Tale was bad!

I was amused that the emulator is larger than the game itself though...

There are sunsets over other oceans my friend. Well, to tell the truth, as I was playing it, I was also capturing screens. I didn't play all the way through, and quite honestly don't have the time to devote to working on it right now anyway. If you are really interested in the screens that I captured, I'll send them your way. If not, maybe sometime in the future we can ressurect this thread and continue it then...

Well.... looking at it from a historical standpoint, yeah, it'd be cool to redo it. But looking at it from a gameplay standpoint, not really, unless you were to redo the entire story. The plot seems very weak in comparison to today's standards.

If it is to be redone, perhaps it should be done to be as modern as possible (perhaps even a step in front!). Hi-res graphs... special effects, etc etc.

Hmmm... but it should still be 2D.

What special effects could be added to this game which haven't been done previously in other adventure-games?

Gronagor, aren't you getting a bit ahead of yourself? I thought you already had another game project going. What will the Hero6 people say? <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":p">

To tell the truth, I have almost no free time at all. In fact I probably don't really have the time to be writing this. However, if someone does get a team together, I'll be happy to send those screens I captured to them. Maybe I can help out when things slow back down for me.

Hmmm... if someone could perhaps upload the first (walkable) screen pic and post it here, we could use it as an example screen for people to learn from.

Heh... Mystery house is not walkable. There are no animations. It is kind of like Myst (1st person, but not 3D). There only movement on the screen is things like opening doors, etc. And that isn't really animation, it's just another version of the background with the door open...

This site has several screenshots from the game.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... ynuke04 at: 1/13/04 11:10 pm
