It all depends on what sort of game you want to make. For adventure games, Adventure Game Studio is what most people around here use.

There's a demo and plenty of tutorials on the site that are worth looking at.[/url]

Do you want to do art? Programming? Music? Writing? What area do you feel more appealing?

Best thing to do is what Klytos said, download AGS have a look at the tutorials then try making like a 1 game room or something.

Basic will just screw up your brain for real programming languages. At least with AGS it's similar in syntax to C+, which is what a lot of games are written in.

I'm surprised that nobody has suggested SCI studio to you, based on the same engine used to design Sierra games such as Kings Quest, Space Quest, Polic Quest etc. Anyway, I spent dozens upon dozens of hours playing around with this program, Brian Provinciano is a true genius. It's worth checking out: http://www.bripro.com/scistudio/index.php

Something else that will help you make successful games.

Rules of Grammar, Syntax and Style of the English language.

It helps.

Glad to be of help, let us know if you find the program useful. I think Brian is currently working on a new version of SCI which will allow SVGA scenery etc, but I don't believe this will be released for some time yet. Have a play around with SCI Studio anyway, it's a powerful little gem.
