Because quite a few people feels a bit nostalgic about the orginal EGA version.

Also, the hero's clothes were cooler in the original.  :p (And centaur-girl cuter.  :lol )

In which category goes the EGA version that is named Quest for Glory I instead of Hero's Quest?  :p

hmmm... don't think they've ever released an EGA Quest for Glory I, so I don't get your question.

Isn't that screenshot from the Quest For Glory Anthology package?

The EGA version of Quest for Glory 1 is included in the Anthology.  It's Hero's Quest that's rarer I think.

Hmmm... didn't know they changed it for the Anthology release. Strange.

As for the HQ1 being difficult to get... hmmm... to buy, yes.  :p

The original Hero's Quest game would be hard to find now I would think.  It was the original version, but I believe after a legal issue with Milton Bradley which has a board game by the name "Hero Quest", Sierra changed the name to Quest for Glory.  This was during the time when they were still selling the EGA game, before the VGA remake came out.  See the picture for the different versions.  The one on the far left is the original version, the middle one is almost the same except for the name change, and the one on the right is the VGA remake.

Heh, the reason they probably had "So You Want To Be A Here" so much larger than "Quest For Glory I" was probably so people wouldn't get confused lol.

The original HQ is harder to find? There I was thinking that I was actually lucky, because everyone was calling the EGA version of QFG1 Hero's Quest...

Well, I don't have stats to back up my theory that "Hero's Quest" is harder to find than "Quest for Glory I EGA".

The QFG Anthology and QFG Collection Series both come with "Quest for Glory I EGA".  I know that "Hero's Quest" was only sold up until the point of when they re-branded the game to avoid a legal fight over the rights to the name.  So in theory it would seem that "Quest for Glory I EGA" would be more common; it was sold more recently than HQ, and was later re-released on the Anthology & Collection Series packages.

What I don't know is if HQ sold 500,000 copies, and QFG1EGA only sold 100,000.  So for all I know my theory may not stand up against the stats... just not sure where to get accurate stats from on this.   8o

well I know that I own 2 Copies of QFG1 EGA and 0 copies of Heroe's Quest. The reason I stated it as is when I created the poll though was just to make things simpler if the reader didn't really understand the whole VGA and EGA thing. Just now in the OT forum there's a topic about MIs shots for KQV in AGI and there was minor confusion.

I also just noted that there are 100 votes in this thread exactly. Is that a record?

QFG 4 was the best

#88 Post by dragonflame9900 » Thu Apr 03, 2008 10:09 pm

The original QFG 4 was fantastic and have Very little bugs. Its when sierra tried to be slick and make it into a windows program that screwed it up. While the voices were cool the destroyed a lot of the graphics and somehow came up with a whole batch of bugs

Oh really? I had no idea that was the case. I had the original QFG4 for DOS and remember encountering no bugs whatsoever. Ever since I heard about Error 52 I wanted to see it for myself but never ran into the dreaded thing. Which is a very good thing, but I just thought I was blessed with the only perfect copy of QFG4. Oh well, at least I was in a way.

on todays computer I still had a problem I remember my oldest brother bought both copies of the game and couldn't get them running pristine, here I am with the anthology in the same boat. It's retarted how many copies of each QFG I have. only one copy of number II though and I refuse to play it.

QFG4 in DOS mode didn't run too badly on a computer such as a 486 DX 33MHz, but as computers became faster, timing bug issues started to come out of the woodwork.  Nothing that the NewRisingSun patches cannot fix now, but before finding those it did become frustrating trying to play QFG4 on a Pentium I or II (or anything more advanced).

As for the differences between Hero's Quest and QFG1EGA, they are so similar that it wouldn't really make sense to have a poll option to vote for one or the other.

I still play QFG4 in my 486 at 50MHz, and there are some bugs, although most are passable without patches by playing around with the Detail and Speed sliders. The most frustrating is the final bug, when you can not cast the Staff spell once you defeated Ad Avis, and you have to restore and play all the final sequence again with speed at fullest (hard to beat A.A. at full speed).

Yep, they are truly the same game. So far the only difference I recall is that the Dryad theme is played twice in QFG1, whilst it only was played once in Hero´s Quest. Not really worth a full replay or a poll, agree?  ;)

I'd argue that QFG1VGA is similar enough too, but I'm the guy that thinks that ASCII roguelikes have O.K graphics.

I voted for Quest for Glory IV. I loved the dark story line and all the wonderful characters. I also liked the nostalgic feel as it was the closest to the first Quest for Glory than all the others. But my absolute favorite thing about this particular game was that the villain had redeeming qualities. I never like it when a villain is completely evil.

Trial by fire is my favourite because of... well everything really, it was so charming :lol It's the only adventure game I've ever played with a text parser where it didn't bother me at all

QFG4 is next because of the depth of the plot and particularly the subplots (namely the paladin quests) and the resolution of the plot from QFG2.

Dragonfire's next because although the plot was quite weak I personally found it pretty smooth to play and the it was very versatile even by the standards of the others in the series. I liked the addition of special equipment as well (as opposed to the dagger/sword/paladin sword choice of the others).

QFG3 is fourth but I still really enjoyed it, the demons were excellent enemies, shame it didn't have more things for a thief to steal.

And the first game is last. I just didn't enjoy it as much as all the others.

And as for QFG4 1/2, if I hadn't played that I would never have discovered AGS, would never have played KQ2 remake and never found ADGI and that alone is worth putting it on the poll for me :D

now that I've played 2 finally and understand what makes IV so good I really don't know what I would vote if I made this poll today and not back in 2004. It's hard to believe this thread is now over 4 years old. I'd probably say they're all good in their own way now but only because the story arc has complete closure for me now finally.

I'm saying IV, I love the Remake of QfG 2 though, but that's not on the list.

I expect people that see it now would assume I meant the newer version and not the original but it would be unfair to add a new game to a poll this old. Voting one over teh other really just signifies that you either care a lot about the graphics, you hated the Parser interface or the new Easter eggs really made it for you.
