Gabriel Knight: New Orleans Sights

#1 Post by Snarky » Mon Mar 01, 2004 5:24 am

I'm going to New Orleans in a week or so, for a convention. I just played Gabriel Knight (overrated, I'm sorry to say <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":\"> ), and I'm wondering if there are any places I should go see, from the game or just in general. Many of the locations in the game exist in reality, right? It'll be cool to see Jackson Square and the St Louis Cathedral for myself. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

First of all, how dare you say GK1 was overrated!!! The game is brilliance personified!!!

As for the places to go, check out what's really on the corner of Bourbon and Dumaine. It isn't St. George's Rare Books, but it's still cool. If I remember correctly, I think it's, like, a burger joint or something with some killer burgers. I saw a picture of it once.

Also, the police station really is on the corner of Royal and Conti, so I guess you could check that out. As for the rest of the locations, I can't really think of them right now. I think that Voodoo museum Dr. John was the curator of actually exists, as does the drug store. Other than that, I can't help you.
-----------------------
CrisS
Writer/PR Assistant
King's Quest IX: Every Cloak Has A Silver Lining
www.kq9.org

<img src="http://www.sighost.us/members/thelongwa ...
"Follow me into the desert as thirsty as you are. I thought the story wasn't all that. Especially the ending, which managed to combine cliché and anticlimax.

I did like many of the puzzles, the dialogue was excellent (as was the voice acting), and the rada drummers showing up all over the place was a nicely ominous touch.

It's a good game, for sure, but I wouldn't call it the best ever.

The New Orleans setting was neat, and has made me even more excited about visiting the city. Thanks for the tips on places to see. I'm staying in a hotel just outside of the French Quarter, so I'll have plenty of opportunity to check this stuff out.

Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... >Snarky at: 3/1/04 12:32 am

I think GK is one of those games that is better if you played it as a kid. I've been hearing so much about how "adult" it is, what a deep story and so on; and I'm sure that if I played it when it came out I would have thought so too.

Coming to it for the first time as an adult, though, I found the horror/thriller elements tame, the mystery banal, the backstory corny and the finale cliché. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/grin.gif ALT=" >D">

What has often been held as its greatest strength, the story, is in fact its main weakness, IMO. The story in Dagger of Amon Ra made less sense but had more suspense, Conquests of the Longbow was simpler but more engaging, QFG4 was more derivative but felt fresher. I'll say this for the story in GK, though: It was better than Phantasmagoria.

But what I really wanted to talk about in this topic was New Orleans. So, how about it, eh?

Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I think Gabriel Knight was revolutionary simply because it put the story first, over the puzzles.

Until then, in my opinion, graphic adventures were more about figuring out how to catch a cat with a weak line of thread than telling a story.

Plus, Gabriel is very likable.

By the way, if I were to ever go to New Orleans, I would visit Anne Rice's house...

To throw eggs at it.
<img src="http://www.nyrock.com/imgs99b/typeonega ...
Four dicks from Brooklyn
Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... rGrazzt at: 3/1/04 5:57 am

Yeah: I think that's why you don't feel like the hero yourself in GK, but more like you are watching a movie.

I would love to go to New Orleans, but in a couple of weeks I am going to Munich, Germany (that's München for you, Spikey). I still haven't been able to find GK2, but I do plan to visit Neuschwanstein. Speaking of that, check this site out:
Neuschwanstein in Gabriel Knight: A Beast Within

Gabriel Knight is one of the few adventure games from that time that made for a good novel.
<img src="http://www.nyrock.com/imgs99b/typeonega ...
Four dicks from Brooklyn

You know, I haven't read the Sandman in such a long time that I forget exactly where all the pictures are from. GK1

#22 Post by pstibbons1 » Wed Mar 03, 2004 8:24 am

I'll agree that the ending of GK1 was more than a little trite, and overblown to the point of silliness, but most of the game underplayed the suspense, and that worked superbly. Part of the difficulty with some of GK1's writing, I think, is that Jane Jensen was being pretty experimental. while most stories make use of archetypes in some form or another, Jensen made a game where archetypes were the CENTER of the story. Unconscious symbolism was the word of the day.

This was a good idea, and, in combination with some brilliant puzzles, probably made the game what it is. However, there were points where Jensen definitely went overboard.

[SPOILERS]

There are TWO seer-gypsy types in the game, one of which appears very briefly, gives a laughable ominous warning, and disappears. There was a "slaying the dragon" scene with painfully blunt symbolism. The coffin scene in the lecture was sort of... incongruous, and not half as frightening as it wanted to be.

As for weaknesses not related to symbolism: The scenes in the burial mound were REALLY over-the-top, especially the appearance of Wolfgang Ritter. More Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom than horror, really. The ending, as mentioned above, was... kind of dumb. GK3 managed to one-up GK1, though, by tacking on an ending that was more abrupt, and even sillier.

But these are remarkably few flaws when you consider how innovative, suspenseful, and well-designed GK1 generally was.

A minor example:

The bit where you have to use the drum code in the endgame, calling Dr. John out of his room, was superbly done. Somehow it just felt a lot more tense than the typical "distract the bad guy and grab an item" puzzle.

Well, the cool thing about GK was that it could be Indiana Jones if it wanted to be. It wasn't only a horror game, it was a suspense action thriller mixed with fantasy and folklore as well. That's why I didn't mind if the blood and gore elements weren't as pronounced or prolific as they are in your regular horror films/games. It was drawing on other genres. As for the prophetic dream sequences, I liked them. They didn't seem too corny to me at all. But, like I said, to each their own. *shrug* Whatever.
-----------------------
CrisS
Writer/PR Assistant
King's Quest IX: Every Cloak Has A Silver Lining
www.kq9.org

<img src="http://www.sighost.us/members/thelongwa ...
"Follow me into the desert as thirsty as you are.
