Translation Aid

#1 Post by Erpy » Sun Apr 21, 2002 11:48 pm

Alright. It seems the translations are getting along. Some of them are getting near completion, others are still in progress.

Fulljee pointed out to me that it might be a good idea to create a thread where translators could ask for help on certain things and people whose language was already covered could offer their assistance.

Currently, another dutch person is checking my translation for me and I think it's a very good idea to let a person who speaks the same language double-check your script. Two people know more than one and backup-correctors are often able to pick errors out of a script that were completely overlooked. Also, a second mind can come in handy when dealing with death messages which often contain puns.

Since the original translation-thread is getting very big, I have decided to create a new thread so it will be easier for translators and correctors to find the info they need. The optimal number of correctors would be 1 or 2 for every translator, although that's likely not realistic for some languages.

Below is a list of translators who are working on a translation right now. If your language isn't covered here and you want to do a translation yourself, apply in the translation thread. If your language is covered already and you want to offer help by checking a finished script for errors or giving a second opinion on certain things, post in this thread and mention the language you could help in. If you're a translator who finished a script and you want to let someone else check it, browse through this topic to see if there are any volunteers or simply mention that you're looking for second opinions and wait for possible replies.

Below is a list of all people who posted in the translation thread:

Das_Jan: German

Fribbi: Icelandic

Leandro Tami: Spanish

Elsa Von Spielburg: Greek

Sniggering Mason: Swedish

D. W: Welsh (He contacted us directly, so I don't know a username)

TTJ: Danish

Duarh: Latvian

Michel Baril: French

DK: Italian

Mrfx2211: Latin

Zergatik: Euskera

Khutma: Portugese

Hyperion: Norwegian

???: Hebrew (He contacted Tierra directly, but I haven't seen him in the translators thread)

Erpy: Dutch

Manual Translation

#2 Post by DasJan » Mon Apr 22, 2002 1:47 am

I just wanted to add that if anybody has problems with making the manual translation here is what to do:

1.)
Download the template files for the manual (blank pages, sketches, ...) from <a href="http://www.dasjan.de/temp/manual_templa ... . With them you will probably be able to recreate the manual in your language using a program like Paint Shop Pro or (better) Photoshop.

2.)
If you don't have enough experience with such a graphic program then you can contact Erpy (stijnempel@hotmail.com, it's in your profile, so I hope it's OK I post it here) or me (das_jan@t-online.de). We will be able to help you.

Das Jan

---
www.dasjan.de | www.adventure-treff.de
Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/udasjan.showPu ... >DasJan at: 4/21/02 8:57:04 pm

Yes, it's OK to post my email adress here. I wouldn't have made it visible in my profile if people weren't allowed to contact me through mail.

An additional note: each translator has his or her own writing style. Some people are more confortable with fairly litteral translations, others try to say everything in their own words. It's hard for a translator to deny a grammar error or punctation error, but on suggestions regarding the style of the messages, the translator will have the final say.

There's one final thing I'd like to say. If a translator has the time to do so, I think it would be a good idea to create a walkthrough in your own language. This walkthrough could be a point list, a solution or a Question-Answer document. The reason I think this would be a good idea is obvious. Game help at this forum is likely limited to english. And the existing walkthrough will be of little help in figuring out the gnome's name.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashs ...

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... py>Erpy at: 4/24/02 3:38:11 pm

DasJan, thanks for the templates. Erpy, I think it would be nice to translate the Launcher. How do you think?

I'm afraid that's not gonna happen. The launcher isn't part of AGS and thus, it's not gonna change by a simple additional tra-file. This means Tierra would have to create a new launcher for every language and I don't think that's gonna happen.

Oh, by the way. This is for everyone who is working on a manual; Jan should have included a picture of the new inventory window. Needless to say, the description of the inventory on page 28 would also need a tiny update. I suggest to implement a piece between "look" and "ok".

The hand icon allows Graham to manipulate/touch items. Sometimes, Graham uses the item. (if it's the ring, for example)

Other times, Graham simply touches the item. ("the carrot feels crispy.")

So it should be something like: "TOUCH (hand): Allows you to use or touch the item."

It's no big deal if you leave it out, but you might want to add it, if you can squeeze it in.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashb ...

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... py>Erpy at: 4/24/02 5:57:27 pm

A short question about the translation:

Line 2874: "You duck."
When does this message appear?
Das Jan

---
www.dasjan.de | www.adventure-treff.de

Click the hand on Graham in the dark forest where the witch appears. He'll duck down and the witch will miss. If she misses three times, she'll give up and leave.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nasht ...

Ahh... that was easy. I thought of the animal "duck" wenn I read the line.

But another question: When will there be the first beta version of KQ1VGA 3.0 for the translators? I just finished the first version of the German translation and am ready to beta test it. I will re-read and correct the file and will give it to a second corrector, but I'm sure there are some mistakes that will only show up when the text is in the context of the game.
Das Jan

---
www.dasjan.de | www.adventure-treff.de

I have a beta-version right now, but it doesn't support truetype fonts yet, so it will crash as soon as a non-standard character should be displayed. I'm still waiting for the next version myself.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashc ...

More Russian people

#18 Post by Alex ASP » Fri Jun 28, 2002 12:16 pm

Well, long ago I wrote somewhere here that I can help with translation of the game. Then there was a period of silence as I was told "please wait". Now I see, you already have a Russian translator, so I can help him if you want, just mail alex_asp@yahoo.com

How about Asian languages?

#20 Post by Desslar » Sat Jun 29, 2002 4:05 am

If the program is able to support special characters in the future, I could tackle a Japanese translation.

KQ1VGA 3.0 currently supports Truetype fonts already. I believe that a japanese translation could be done in theory if you'd import a japanese font. The only thing is that the characters are always aligned from the top-left. So any languages that are supposed to be read from right to left will be very hard to support.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashs ...

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... py>Erpy at: 6/28/02 11:51:00 pm

Actually, when the text is written horizontally (as is usually the case in comic books, magazines, and software) Japanese is read left to right just like English, so that shouldn't be a problem.
