The Economics of a 2D Adventure in Today's Market

I just read This Article on Ron Gilbert's site. It is a very interesting read and, seeing that we now know about the plans of Himalaya Studios to do just what the article describes, I was wondering if people here agree with Gilbert's speculations.

It's an interesting article to be sure, but I think he makes an aweful lot of assumptions about dollar values on things. In fact, I don't rate the article much at all.

The use of the 200 000 downloads of MMD is irrelevant. We know that fan remakes have a heap of downloads, but I also know that I for one wouldn't pay for it. It's not that I don't enjoy the remakes (KQ1 KQ2 MMD etc) but at the end of the day I already own the games, and it's not too difficult to get them working on new systems (regardless of the endless threads on boards like this...) When Sierra released their remakes of SQ1, PQ1, QFG1 and KQ1 I didn't buy them until they were in a pack together and discounted. Not because they're bad games but because they're not different enough for me to care.

I think you'll see what sort of numbers we'll get when AGDI (or whoever they are that day) release that Alan Quartmaine type game they're working on. Although I'd also be interested in seeing what sort of figures we get for piracy. In this community, people are used to having it all for free. Are they going to want to pay for a download now?

I've been known to download a thing or two BUT I will be first in line to buy the Himalaya game.
