The reason why I was surprised is because in the past 1 1/2 year, it's becoming BIG. It's beginning to be all over the radio now, and I'm just kind of surprised that it's only the seattle area (apparantly).

Umm bigger indie bands:

Modest Mouse (although I actually hate them.)
Jimmy Eat World
Franz Ferdinand (kinda)
At the Drive-In
Coldplay (you should know this one)

You may have heard of a few of those.

I also kinda like some jazz that I've heard. Anyone into The Bad Plus?

Oi, I am alone in this sea of horrible music... I am a metal purist. I love almost all types of metal, save nü, hair, and black (although black and hair are tolerable). Foremost in my mind are classic/british, speed and death/progressive death (Opeth)...and then some classic rock thrown in

best bands?

OPETH!
Iron Maiden
Slayer
Pantera
Old Metallica (before Black)
some King Diamond
Death
Darkthrone
Kreator
Zeppelin
Hendrix
The Doors
Emporer
Megadeth (mainly just Countdown to Extinction)
Dreamtheatre
Nevermore
Deicide

Once Upon a December

"Once Upon a December"

Dancing bears, pianted wings,
Things I almost Remember.
And a song someone sings,
Once Upon a December!

"Let me be your wings"

Let me be your wings,
Let be your only love,
Let take me you far beyond the stars!

I mostly listen to punk but I also like some movie/musical soundtracks, The Beatles, old Metallica,Franz Ferdinand, a little bit of opera, and probably some other random stuff that I can't think of right now.

My tastes vary a fair bit (Trance, Metal, Alternative, so on). Here's a quick list of artists and DJs that I've listened to recently:

- Smashing Pumpkins (got their greatest hits album recently (Rotten Apples))
- Ministry Of Sound (particularly DJs Mark Ferris and Jason Midro on the Hard NRG compilations)
- Armin Van Buuren
- Armand Van Helden (particularly "My My My" and "Hear My Name")
- The Prodigy (the latest offering (Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned), is a little bit off, but stuff like "Music For The Jilted Generation" and "Fat Of The Land" are their best work, IMO)
- Junior Jack ("Stupidisco")
- Rob Zombie (dug up the "Hellbilly Deluxe" album recently and had a listen)
- Paul Oakenfold (finally got around to getting "Bunkka")

As a sidenote, gangsta, rap and hiphop just plain irritate me. They rely too much on the vocals (which at times, can be very hard to distinguish) and often have too basic a backing rhythm. I generally prefer listening to stuff that's fast-paced or has a good backing arrangement.

The White Stripes
Weird Al
Michael Jackson

Those are my favourites even though they are all from different genres a stoner teacher of mine once said "someone who listens to music of all types is probably a well balanced person" but I just am who I am

PS. I hate rap so freaking much *Discuss*

As much as I hate rap, I have to say that, while the beat is simple, it works. The simple repetative beat is good "slow ride" music.

I only defended rap because I like it at least 30 times more than punk or the like.

For me mostly metal/hard rock/classic rock. Too many bands to list all of them, but here's a few:

Testament
Iced Earth
Megadeth
Iron Maiden
Motorhead
Led Zeppelin
Cream
Black Sabbath
Guns 'n' Roses
... and yes, Weird Al is hilarious, so I have to include him. I just bought his DVD with every music video he ever made. They still make me laugh every time I see them. :D

i wanna get that dvd but if you're looking for some true weird al fun get his movie from the 80's UHF it's about george newman (Al) who is trying to get a carreer on track but can't because of his over active imagination but ti changes when he starts making his own tv shows on a UHF station his uncle gave him. It's great I saw it yesterday and some of the parodies blow me away everytime such as "Gahndi II, Rambo, Conan the Librarian, wheel of fish, etc" it's a great buy and it was just released on DVD. Maybe we could work out a trade for that music video tape

On topic i forgot that Iron Maiden and Red Hot Chilli Peppers get honorable mentons

My favourite music:

The Cure
Metallica
RHCP
Weezer
They Might Be Giants
Nirvana
REM
Radiohead
Michael Jackson
The Flaming Lips
Bush
Ben Folds (/Five)
The Beatles
The Ataris

and some Australian bands most people probably haven't heard of:

Silverchair
Frenzal Rhomb
Jebediah
Eskimo Joe
Area 7
The Living End

I also think Eminem is an excellent artist (*gasp*), but I don't really like most D12 stuff.
