Subtitles in Sierra's games?

#1 Post by JLM5 » Fri Nov 19, 2004 11:47 pm

After I realized the infuriating and horrible thing that KQ5CD doesn't include subtitles at all, I got little concerned about the existence of subtitles in the other Sierra's games (or CD-versions of them).

Ok... QFG4CD was well done, because it allowed you to use both speech and subtitles simultaneously. But in SQ4CD you could just select between speech or subtitles because of some unknown reason. Of course I had to select subtitles because I simply don't understand spoken English very well.

I have never played (for example) Gabriel Knight 1, 2 or 3. However I have heard they are good games, so I really hope they'd allow the player switch subtitles on. What's the truth?

Does someone know what are the Sierra's (CD-)games that doesn't allow player to see conversations in subtitles?

And why those idiots in Sierra didn't realized the fact, that English is not the native language of everyone who wants to play adventure games!? >: >:

I think KQ5CD was the only game that had only speech and no subtitles. I'm pretty sure all other games either had 'speech and subtitles' and/or 'speech or subtitles'.

I couldn't solve a puzzle in KQ7 because of the lack of subtitles.
I ended up using a walkthrough, just to find out that
The archduke Le Yip Yap (or whatever his name was) said "Be sure to take the Faux Shop with a grain of salt". I couldn't understand what he was saying otherwise and had no clue how to solve this puzzle.
The games in the GK series always allowed sound and subtitles simultaneously, iirc.

There's no good reason for a game that has both sound and text not to allow both at the same time. It's sad that several sierra games have this blatant flaw.

not just for those whose native language is not english, but what about those who are hearing impaired? should they not be able to enjoy adventure games as well?

or, what about those like me, who get irritated with having to listen to everything read instead of just reading it and having it over with?

I had read somewhere that you could get subtitles in KQ7 by changing a setting in an initialization file, something like sound=0, but I have never tried it myself.

I've tried this with many sierra's games

KQ5 - There's just speech no text and it not very well done. I couldn't understand alot of it.

KQ6- You have an option of just speech or just text. It would have been nice to have both.

KQ7- Just speech again. I remember I pulled some trick in the dos version that allowed you to get the text but it really wasn't meant to be there. Sorry I can't remember how I did it.

SQ4- You have an option of just speech or just text. There's a way half in the game to get both at the same time. It's in the SQFAQ. Something in the Software store when your looking in the bargain bin and while the narrator is talking you press spacebar and exit the bin then you get both and can't get rid of it.

SQ6- Option of having speech, text, or both. neat

LSL6- I just have text version so I don't know.

LSL7- Option of having speech, text, or both. neat

PQ4- I think you can do both I don't remember.

Freddy Pharkas- Just one or the other.

Hope that helps.

I think for awhile they couldn't do both at the same time. I mean, if they could, why wouldn't they? Then again, I don't know what was going through Ken Williams' head when these were made, so I couldn't tell you.

As far as the GK games are concerned, you get speech and text in every game except I think GK2. If I'm not mistaken that's just speech. Something to do with the FMV, maybe? I dunno, I could be wrong...

I'm positive you could somehow switch text on in KQ7. I always did that. You could run both text and speech at the same time.

Do you remember at all how you did it? Does it works in the Win95-version of KQ7 (I have just it)?

I haven't played that game in ages. I shall try it on the first oppurtunity.

More importantly, does it work in the MAC version of KQ7?
