#1 Post by Music Head » Mon Jan 03, 2005 4:35 am

I'm sure everyone out there knows of a prgram, website, service, ect. That they've found and can't live without. I know i have a few that i never knew existed and now i use em everyday.

So anyway i thought that everyone who reads this post can put a link to one of those little great thigns. This resulting in the best of the best on the net.

To get things started i'll post a link to:

A description after the link would be useful.

I'll describe one of them, then:

Messenger Plus! add-on. Works with both MSN and Windows Messenger. Includes several "patches" to Messenger, among those being able to write longer messages, use color in them, notifications when people on your Contacts change their displayed name or go offline, POP3 checking and much more.

When installing, it is important to deselect the sponsor applicaiton (visible as a toolbar in IE) to be installed, as it can cause system instability (not to mention it is regarded as spyware). Messenger Plus itself is harmless, however. You may need to choose to do a custom install to deselect the sponsor (not sure, as I always take custom when available).

ok statistics:

All files compressed with maxamun compression

Original files: 4.28 mb

WinZip: 3.36
WinRar: 3.27
7-Zip: 3.21

Although 7-Zip has best compression i don't like the look and feel
Win-zip got best look
WinRara winner with in my opinion for it compresses more than WinZip and still has a great look

Speaking of compression...

NSIS, Nullsoft Scriptable Install System. While technically meant for installers, it works well as a replacement for self-extracting ZIPs with its tiny overhead (~40KB) and support of LZMA/7-zip compression.
All you really need to do is write a tiny .nsi (text) file of less than a kilobyte, and then compile through the Explorer right-click menu - voila, self-extracting 7z!. Takes about 5 minutes to learn how to do that, and it gets you excellent compression without giving other people the hassle of having to find a proper decompression program. Or yourself for that matter, in case you use it for backups.

And if you don't want to bother with the scripts, make a (temporary) ZIP and use the ZIP2EXE converter included. It doesn't get much easier than that.
