Merlin. He's practically a legend.

Seriously, I'll have to go with Merlin. The most powderful wizard of them all.

Well, if that's the case, then several kq9 members who are Powerful Wizards will also qualify for this poll, Jafar, and I doubt there's enough room for all of them in this poll. :P

Merlin it is.  That's actually what I name my magic user / wizard in QFG.  Unoriginal, I know.

LOL @ Gargamel.. well hey I mean he could apparently turn a Smurf into gold.  That reminds me, did anyone hear the story about the Smurfs being based on the idea of KKK vs. the powers that be, in some strange twisted way?  I thought it was total nonsense, but some good points were made.

The creator, after he passed away, was found to have tons of junk.  Newsletters, booklets, posters, transcripts of speeches, etc.  So the guy was nuts and read lots of KKK literature.  So what, he was either racist or fascinated with what they were all about.  What's that have to do with the Smurfs?  He also had documents containing anti-Jewish propaganda, some of them from the KKK, some of them from other groups.

Gargamel and Asriel (the cat) are apparently (according to the documents) old-style Jewish names.  In the cartoon, those two were the evil ones, trying to capture and destroy the Smurfs.  Some racist groups say Jewish people control the world.  Ok, so still no "smoking gun" here.  Another part is that Gargamel was trying to turn them into gold.  Some racist documents have stated that Jewish people have "Gold Fever" and/or are greedy.  Alright so still, a little far-fetched.

Now for the Smurfs themselves.  Smurfette had blonde hair, blue eyes... Aryan girl?  Ahh.. no, she herself was blue!

This is the part that gets me:

What do the KKK wear?  White sheets, and white pointy hats?  Wait... all the Smurfs have white point hats!  -- Except Papa Smurf.  He has a red one.  Know what?  The Grand Dragon of the KKK, the leader.... wears red, and has a red pointy hat.  Son of a .....

So the guy who made the cartoons, some say, was basing it on the poor Smurfs (KKK) trying to fight for freedom and resist against the overpowering Gargamel (Jewish control).  Of course, this does not mean kids are going to be corrupted from watching it!  So who cares.  Just very weird... and twisted.

I am sure, no one ever would have thought of this, without all those KKK documents being found after the creator passed away.

Yeah, I've heard of it here from a friend. He said he didn't like the show because of it. Oh well.

And the hooked nose of Gargamel? Another anti-semitic feature of the jews. The more you dig, the more you find. But it hardly matters, the Smurfs was a great show.

Gandalf, being a maia, should be significantly more powerful than the rest of them (most of which are mere humans). Also he's the only one in the list who has never actually been defeated by his adversaries.

Merlin -> defeated by Morgana which marks roughly the end of the Arthur saga
Erana -> trapped by Avoozl for a very long time and rescued by a friggin' cat burglar
Harry Potter -> gets defeated by his fellow students at Quidditch, etc, and would be dead a long time ago if it weren't for Hermione and Dumbledore
Elminster -> don't know actually, given the power level of those books he may actually be a magic god by now, but that's just cheesy.
Gargamel -> gets defeated by little blue giggling creatures, come on
Manannan -> now a misspelled cat
MS Excel Pivot Table Creator -> killed by Clippy in 2002.

Finally someone else who vouches for Gandalf!

Actually, in all fairness, though, Gandalf was sort of defeated. He died attacking the Balrog. At least he killed his enemy before he died. But then he was sent back to life because he was uber-cool. It's all about Gandalf, guys, come on. :)

1. Gandalf WAS defeated by the Balrog.

2. Harry never was defeated by You-Know-Who!

No, he killed the Balrog, then spent a while in Limbo to wash the grubby gray out of his robe, then returned triumphant to Lego/Ara and Gimli.
2. Harry never was defeated by You-Know-Who!
Actually he would have been in book five, had Dumbledore not interfered. And he would have been in book four, had not the Ravenclaw guy died for him, and had his parents not interfered. And in book one, had not his mother sacrificed herself for him. Granted, he has lived through everything (and probably will for the next two books) but that's because the entire wizarding world (plus his muggle aunt) keeps saving him.
Plus he gets defeated by Draco on a regular basis, and Hermione can kick his ass magic-wise ten times out of nine.

Harry Potter was a nerd to me, not worthy of being a wizzard or whatever he does. :p

Not exactly. Under some of the tellings of the Arthurian legend, Merlin was not defeated by Morgana; rather, he was lured away or imprisoned by Nimue (the Lady of the Lake) and placed in an enchanted tower from which even he could not escape, there to remain for all time.

I'd have to go for Gandalf, because he's the only one who's a decent fighter when you take him magic away. Elminster is okay in that department as well, but he's been into the whole 'Wise Sage' business so long he'd get blisters at the first melee combat and drop his sword.

Why isn't Pug in that list?

Because he's not half as powerful as Macros? Anyway Macros would probably score third in that list, after Gandalf and Elminster.

For that matter, where's Ged/Sparrowhawk? Where's Vanyel Demonsbane? And how about Haplo the Patryn?

(let's see...  in terms of raw power level, at an estimate,)
Gandalf / Mithrandir
Ged / Sparrowhawk
Macros the Black
Elminster and other assorted D&D wizzies
Vanyel
Haplo
Merlin
Erana
Manannan
Pivot Table Creator
Harry Potter
Gargamel
