I thought QG5 had some great things and at same time some realy bad things. I still liked it but here is what made it fall short of a great game:
1) Return to QG3 travel system I much prefered 1, 2 and 4 where you went from screen to screen it made me get in to game much more.
2) Zommed out character anywhere outside of the city, it was realy not fun to control the tiny character.
3) Combat sucked!!! I mean realy Sucked. I mostly just carried mana pills and used frost on everything.
4) Underdeveloped Ideas, like swiming aside from traveling to atlantis you do not need it and it realy is not a usefull skill. There is no pirate treasure, sunken ship anything to make it cool.
5) I did not realy like the variety of weapons but thats personal preference.
6) And i seem to alone here but i thought thief jobs were sorely lacking as compared to 1 2 and 4. I was probably better then 3 but thats rather easy as their were no thief jobs there. But seriously break in house of shapeir is more fun and dificult to rob then the bloody bank of Silmaria. There is no hident stuff, nada. I felt more satisfaction finding the 3 silvers that rolled inside ladies couch in qg1 then I did robing that stupid bank twice.
7) I think blackjack is also responsible for dumming down the thief aspect.

I think the writing was one of the best parts of QFG5. Actually, all the games I think had the best writing (King's Quest DEFINITELY border-lined corny). The only game with better dialogue than QFG games were Gabriel Knight games.

Dislikes

a) Combat System - Nuff Said
b) Marriage Idea..wait read what I have to say first.  The thief, got stiffed.  Everyone matches with an ideal mate, but they just made someone up for the thief.
c) Pointless Spells (Nuclear Winter or whatever..etc)
d) Paladin Powers... too many, too rocked.  Paladin's should be fighters with magic 'support'.  Not wizards with sword.  (IMHO)

Likes
a) Erana/Katrina marriage/returning.
b) Elsa from QFG1 and all the other characters returning

Bought, still glad I finished it Only went through as a Paladin/Erana & Wizard/Katrina though.

Well, Nawar was already there in QFG2. I personally would have thought Dinarzad suited the thief better. But she certainly wouldn't be any less demanding/manipulative than Nawar, that's for sure. In fact, the two would be almost interchangable.

c) Pointless Spells (Nuclear Winter or whatever..etc)
Meh, I thought it was cool to have those red-herring spells from previous games included, if only for novelty value. The Boom and Dragonfire spells were pretty fun to toy around with too.

Does anyone have a version of the game that does not crash when casting ThermoBlast on the dragon? If so, what happens afterwards? Sounds like a nice alternative ending, no?

I dont believe its a matter of versions, Im not sure, but if you use the right tools and patches it should run fine. It does for me.

Some aspects of the game were a triumph, others a flop.  Overall, I would place it halfway between a triumph and a flop.  A trollop.

Trollop?   :D   I like that.

I think v1.2 fixed some issues, such as being able to marry Katrina... in the original (unpatched) QFG5 you could not marry Katrina.  I never really got into the game much, but it wasn't all that bad.  Just not the same as the first four.

In QfG4, Katrina was evil in a very cool way. In QfG5, however, she has these really dumb lines where she explains how she never understood that summoning the Dark Lord would harm all those poor innocent villagers. It was enough to make me barf, restore an earlier game, and rescue Erana instead. Even if, when given flowers, she complains about how I killed the poor plants. Now why couldn't I just conjure up Johari?

I never knew how to marry Erana, I gave her chocolate and jewelery all the time, I talked all the time, but no give. (gave her the ring every time)

Yes, but only for political reason :P
Besides, I won that trial of manhood against him.

Yeah, as the Paladin, I could never figure out how to get Erana to marry me either.  Gave her flowers, chocolate, magic seeds, and the ring.  There must be something else to it.

The only one I could figure out how to marry is Nawar (as the Thief).
