Willy Beamish Sequel!?

#1 Post by mastag83 » Mon Jan 16, 2006 12:08 am

I'm thinking of making a sequel to The Adventures Of Willy Beamish.

I want this game to take a couple of years later. I would like to think the game took place during 1991 and this one will take place during 1993. The reason I wanted it to take place a few years later so there was time to change. Also Willy will have some previous things from the first game as in his Jet Ski and prize money from the Frog Jump and the Nintari Championships. With a new year comes new things like a new gaming system with a sequel to Willy's favorite Nintari game and a set of new adventures. Willy has caused change in Frumpton by being a hero, people were thinking if a 9 year old can stand up to scum so can we and the end result is a better town with less crime and gangs, Frumpton was being cleaned up. When cleaning their tend to be a few blind spots. I also want most of the old cast to return and some characters Willy didn't really get to interact with before. There will be more locations and a longer game. The game time will go by days once again. Some old enemy's will be in the picture as well as new ones.

Tag Line: Adventures get better with age

EDIT: What do you guys think of a sequel along the lines of this?

Ned any Help?
I'm going to need some.

I'm also going to elaborate this further so I can get some suggestions of what people like and don't like.

Did this idea come up when KQ9 got the license to make their own sequel to king quest?

Hmm, an interesting idea. I've never played Willy Beamish, but good luck; I'll be sure to check this out when it's finished. I'd offer my services, but I'm working on another fan project and since I haven't played the original game, I probably wouldn't be much help.

What skills do you have? or What can you help with?

Right now I'm wrestling over wether to have this game be 2D like the 1st game or 3D like how their doing KQ9.

Are you capable of programming a 3d adventure game engine or producing high quality 3d models, textures and animations? Because creating a fully 3d adventure from scratch is pretty much impossible for anyone who doesn't have specific specialised skills.

No I'm not capable of doing those things but I would get someone to help out with that stuff if it's going to be 3D.

Personally, I'm not sure how a Willy Beamish sequel would work. Much in the same way that I was a bit skeptical over the sequel to Space Quest 1; the game cuts off all of its ties so marvellously. You'd not really be able to go on (unless you just did the old, clichéd and somewhat irritating way of "HEY THE BIG BAD VILLAIN IS BACK!").

That said, if you were to make one, I'd say that a 2D layout would really be the only way to go. You're making a game that's about a sequel to the Nintari (which I always thought of as being the best aspects of the Nintendo and the Atari, together! WOO!); 8-bit consoles. Doing them in 3D... I don't know, isn't there some rule against sacrilege? ;)

I'm not bringing Louis and Leona back that's to cliche for this game. There will be ties to the old game except no Nintari console because it's been two years since the last game. There's going to be a new game console, the only reason I mentioned Nintari was an example of things to change but that said Willy will have the Nintari Championship trophy in his room.

I may be a bit old fashioned but I would probably go with a 2D engine. Most of the 3D adventure games I have played just drove me insane. Also I feel that the comical style of willy beamish would probably be really hard to convey in a 3D engine. As for the talk of the bad guys I doubt it matters much, Willy Beamish was just about a kids life and I imagine you can easily find some adventure for Willy to go off on. All I would recommend is avoid repeating the original like having the dad lose his job again or the crazy vampire babysitter. If your planning this out I would recommend you write a basic storyboard and try to do as many fresh ideas as possible.
I would probably avoid repeating the whole nintari championships thing unless you planned on adding in a cool minigame that interfaced with it.
These are just my opinions, although I want to one day get involved in making a game I have never done it so don't take anything I have said to heart.

Sorry I haven't replied here in a while but I think sticking to 2D is a good idea your right about it being to 2D to portray the comical style of Willy Beamish it wouldn't be as good in 3D. As for the story I'm still trying work on it.

I think it would be fun if you added a bit more school into this game than was in the previous. For example in the original there was some early focus on wether you wanted to be a good boy or a bad boy. (Hiding your report card, deleting message about detention, helping mom with dinner, feeding dog, playing with sister etc) Maybe throw in a couple virtual days of school where some form of hijinks ensue. Maybe a new principal or teacher that is trying to cause problems for willy. Possibly giving options like the ability to cheat on a test or do it honestly. Might be fun to have that be a bit of a substory while your actually going against whatever problems willy would be facing after school.
Part of the reason why I feel adding more school would be a good idea is everyone has experience at school and I believe can appreciate some humor related to it. The fear of getting a bad grade or being embarassed in class etc.
Oh well, just some more humble opinions.

I'm assuming this thread is dead.. Lol Guess I'm a little late, but I wanted to say a few things. I've read just about everything in this thread.

For one thing, making a sequel will not require a license unless you're selling the material over the internet. If you did need copyrights then even the people making remakes for free and letting other's people download the games would be pirating the software.

Back to the main topic here. I heard that they were going to make a sequel of Willy Beamish when he was 13 but the project never really took off from there. I would love to offer my assistense. I am currently going to school for 2D and 3D animation, but I'd rather be a sketch/concept artist. I like to draw the characters from Willy Beamish a lot. I can keep a pretty good consitency. Let me know if anybody's still interested. Hell I'll come up with some new ideas if anybody's fresh out! Hehe..

i suppose its a bad idea to bump a 4 year old thread. But i cannot resist asking what happened to this project? i first played "The Adventures of Willy Beamish" when i was about 8 or 9, now at age 22 i still think back on this game with fond memories..i even played(and completed) the game about 4 hours ago..im aware that it has developed somewhat of a cult following and i can see why..whoever considered making a sequel to this game, please reply, and let me know whats going on. or if i can help in any way.

The adventures of willy Beamish is a completely underestimated point and click game.
It would be a perfect time now in 2015 to make a remake/sequel.
