QFG4 Import question

#1 Post by haradan » Mon Jul 23, 2007 7:53 pm

I'm (once again) playing the whole series as a wizard, maxing out all of my spells (when possible) and I just finished QFG3. All my spells except Detect magic are at 300. But when I import into QFG4, a couple of strange things happen:

1) My Open spell has a skill of 7236 or something like that.
2) I have the Paladin ability to heal (I'm not a paladin).
3) My Detect Magic spell went up to 300, when it was 200 at the end of QFG3.

I can play the game just fine, I'm just scared that this will create problems later on or that my character will have problems to import into QFG5.

Anyone knows what is causing these issues and if there will be trouble later on? Thanks.

Well, I'm overwhelmed by all the responses, really.  :rolleyes

Either nobody knows or nobody cares (or both). I'll finish QFG4 pretty soon anyway, so I'll find out.

And when I do, I MIGHT let you know...  :p

Erm... sorry, I've never had that problem with a Wizard.  Is he a straight Wizard, not having any extra stats?  I've had the reverse problem with a Paladin that I import into QFG4.  Since the Paladin gets the heal spell, it gives you magic, and when I import, boom, I have all the spells I can get in the first three games.  Rather odd.

QFG4's import process is known to mess up spell skill values, including sending them up into ridiculous 4 or 5 digit ranges. So I wouldn't worry too much re: 1 and 3; it shouldn't mess up your export into Dragon Fire.

Getting the Heal ability is really weird though. And I'm not sure what consequences it might have on importing. Have you tried re-importing your character a couple times? You can sometimes end up with different results on a second try, even from the same import file. You might be able to get rid of heal that way.

Ultimately I wouldn't worry too much though. If worst comes to worst and DF declares you a Paladin, DF's import does allow you to change your class, just like 3 & 4.

Well, weird enough, but no problems at all. Everything was corrected when importing into QFG5. Open went back to 400, and Healing just disappeared, so I took it as yet another Mordavian magical interference product of the Dark One's cave influence over the valley... (yeah right, like a QFG bug was something unheard of, specially SOD).
Erm... sorry
I was not mad or anything, I was just kidding, thanks for replying even if you had no idea of what was happening. I had the same problem with the paladin and I hated it since I like to play with pure characters, but in the end I got used to the idea that the paladin was some kind of hybrid anyway.

I did try it, and although Open would come with different levels (all in the 7000 - 9000 range), Healing was always there, so I gave up.

Anyway, thanks.

Just out of curiousity, what result if you re-import into QG4 from QG4 after finishing the game, instead of importing into QG5?

Very interesting, makes me think there's some overflow issues where one skill getting too high spills into another one, I've had funny things happen on import too. I wonder if anyone's bothered to crack exactly what values correspond to what in the file

I took a stab at import files with a hex editor once. It's definitely not in a format my meager skills can figure out. :)

I believe it is possible to have the paladin heal spell without a glitch if you import a paladin, but change job to wizard.  I don't know what could have caused that huge skill increase though.

And I have never had a problem importing a qfg4 sav file into qfg4.

That used to happen to me all the time as a Wizard. In fact, I don't really remember a time in which I didn't get the Heal ability from importing. It's just one of the fun adventures of QFG4. :rollin
