What Operating System Do You Use?

#1 Post by Alliance » Tue Aug 05, 2008 11:07 pm

I always find this a fun topic to bring up on forums. So, without further ado, here's the ones I have set up on a Quad-boot, on my PC.

-Windows XP: For the more advanced games that Wine can't play.

-Mac OSX: Well, technically it's OSX86, a project to [illegally] run Mac OSX Leopard on PC hardware. Runs decently.

-OpenSUSE 11.0: For my Linux tinkering. I tend to find it fun. I'm a KDE 4 fan, definitely.

-OpenSolaris: I have to have a man's Unix on my computer. I do some Java development on it, and compile packages.

I have both Windows XP SP2 and Ubuntu Hardy. I keep XP for my music recording programs. So far I haven't seen anything on Linux that comes close to the level of functionality that Sonar for Windows has. Plus Windows has been acting up lately and giving me blue screens of death and spontaneously restarting my computer. So I've been in Ubuntu for a while now.

I've used Ubuntu. It's a nice starter distro for Linux. I agree with it not being on par for multimedia creation for the time being, though.

I use XP SP3 and have Vista on a dual boot which I hardly ever use.

Also use Yellow Dog Linux on PS3.

The Linux sound system as a whole doesn't impress me in the least. I think they still have a lot of work to do in that area. Right now it's passable but that's it.

I mainly use my laptop which is equipped with Vista. But my desktop uses Win 2000. Thank God for dosbox or else I'd be really sunk.

At work I use Debian 4.0 (Etch) and at home Debian Testing (Lenny). I don't use a "desktop environment", just the Awesome window manager. On my Laptop I use Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger), but I'm considering adding a Debian dual boot option to that...

Fortunately, all of QfG2VGA except the opening logo works in WINE...

I also have a 486 desktop which I used to have MS DOS 6.22 and Win 3.11 on but exchanged it for Windows 95 because some old games need Win95. But I mostly run it in command prompt only mode so really I'm just using MS DOS 7 with theWin95 shell occasionally.

I have Mac OSX on my main computer (an iMac) and I've got a little eeePC which I've managed to dual boot both Windows 7 and Mac OSX on. Windows 7 is fairly decent but Mac OS X runs so well it's unbelievable. I upgraded it to 2GB of memory and upgraded the wireless card too so it works just like a Macbook. I did have Ubuntu on there but I really, really dislike any form of Linux. It's a great idea, but it's not for me.

Currently I dual boot Windows Vista and the newest version of Ubuntu linux. Vista runs pretty well on my laptop and so far I have been pretty happy with it. Mostly I keep my Ubuntu install around for the fun of it and to learn linux better.

The biggest problem that I have with switching to straight linux is the compatibility issues that arise. From what I have heard/read many programs can be made to work with enough tinkering or through virtual machines but at that point it just takes forever to get things set up and they don't always work the same.

I've installed Ubuntu just to play around with it and found it simple enough to use. But as Gargin mentioned there is alot of compatability issues. IMHO, linux is kind of a 'geeks' operating system, for computer enthusiasts, or one time curious users like myself. It's not something that'd appeal to the casual user, and majority of us.

The next version of Windows after Vista. Recently it has been released for beta testing. However, i've been using leaked builds for some time.

I downloaded the beta the other day and was going to run it in VirtualBox to see how it is but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

I use OSX on my Imac (Forgot you had one too Brooms, which Model did you go for? Edit: Never mind, I found a post were you said so over at IA) and then I boot into XP to play great games like Fallout3 and Quest For Glory 2. I spend most of my time in OSX though using the remote for front row is just so convenient. on my old Desktop at home I never dual booted but I switched from XP to Vista for about 6 months and then switched back to XP as Vista was very buggy and restricting. I heard that Windows 7 is going to come as an "all in one package" that you get to customize when you install it for whether you need it for gaming or photo editing or what have you. Not sure if that's true though.
