Play a Sierra Game!

#1 Post by Blackthorne519 » Wed Aug 06, 2008 4:49 pm

Here's an idea - every week, we choose a "Sierra" game to play, and we all play through it and discuss our thoughts on the game. Yeah, it's kind of weak - but maybe it'll give us a chance to play through some of the old games we haven't played in a while.

First game to play? Let's choose from......

AGI GAMES

Gold Rush
The Black Cauldron
Space Quest I
King's Quest I
Manhunter: New York
Leisure Suit Larry I

What do you think we should play?

Sounds like a fantastic idea, don't know if I'd have time to play a whole game in a week!

Are you trying to start a book club but with games, BT? And to top it all off, you have to pick AGI games? You expect us to read and type? Bad enough AGDI said they are not going to release a voice pack for QFG2VGA, you have to butt in and have us play games that require reading and typing skills.... What nerve... (J/K) :p

Haha. Yep. Bust out the ole reading and writing skills!

So, let's leave LSL out for now, considering Erpy recently nailed 'em.

No need to. Others might have recently played your other options.

I don't know the future release of SQ2VGA has me wanting to play some SQ1AGI. I have to prepare my Space Janitor character to face off with Vohaul's Ape goons. I have to say the Space Janitor class has always been the most, how you say, interesting. :lol

A week? I can beat SQ1 alone in under 20 minutes. Maybe we should have some rules. Like we have to do everything we can and look at/discover everything so it will take longer instead of just zipping through it.

I love this idea.

Well if I wind up playing anything, you know I'll have to get a perfect score. Blasted perfectionism. :lol

How about we play the AGI games with both ScummVM and DOSBox? That way we can see if anyone can find any bugs using the ScummVM AGI engine. That will make it take longer then 20 minutes to complete one game.

ScummVM uses the Sarien interpreter. An interpreter I hate. It uses some weird synth instrument for the music which sounds awful. The experience is much better in DOSBox with true Tandy 3-voice sound. Or NAGI which actually sounds better because it puts a volume envelope on the Square waves generated. DOSBox doesn't. But they don't have NAGI for Linux so that sucks...I haven't tried it with Wine though, I guess I'll have to sometime.

Sorry, got a bit off-topic there.

While this is a great idea, I don't have the time to play one game extensively in one week. I'd prefer a month.

Have you tried to use the PCjr music driver with ScummVM? I noticed that someone made a feature request on 13 March 2008 for using MIDI for AGI. It does look like you would have to convert the AGI sound resources to MIDI files for this. Maybe we should add a feature request to see if they will add Tandy 3-Voice sound for AGI... Anyways, it's just an idea to help out another project while we are doing our play though for the "game club" :lol

Yea like I first said, I'm not sure I'll have time. I work 10 hour shifts a day then usually have mates round in evening/weekend. So the spare time I do have is usually spent on doing things I need to do lol.

Yeah I have plenty of time. I quit my job and am able to live off my scholarship money. Basically, until classes start I'm either skate boarding or chilling in my apartment with my dog

Also It takes me a few days to complete a game because I get mentally tired after a while and thats with any Adventure game.

SQ1EGA at 1280x720 HD... Think how sexy those pixels will look running in that resolution. :lol

I'm definitely up for this!
For oddity's sake, I'll be playing this in ScummVM on OpenSolaris, as that setup works out great for me. (A Java app on a Sun System? The nerve!)

I wonder, though: is it playable in Win 3.1 under DosBox?

Ok ok, I'll give SQ1EGA a try, never played it before though (the EGA one that is). I'll see how it handles in ScummVM Wii but as its not point and click I may have to run ScummVM PC/DS/PSP.
