 Post subject: Ideas for great new Sierra/Lucas Arts style games

I have recently pried myself away from the life-draining gaming experience that is World of Warcraft and started getting back into classic adventures. I have recently replayed the KQ and SQ Anthologies and rocked most of the QforG games in preparation of this awesome, highly-anticipated release. I also have been on the lookout for newer games done in the fashion of those previously mentioned. I have found games such as A Vampyre Story and was looking to you guys, the experts, for suggestions of newer games done in the vein of Monkey Island/King's Quest for me to purchase and play. Thanks in advance for any ideas :)

EDIT: I have been an avid fan of these games since the mid 80's and am so glad to find others just like me that understand that discontinued does not necessarily mean obsolete. Also I loved the old Discworld games and was wondering if anyone new of any newer sequels of these or something similar. Thanks.

I'm certainly not gonna claim to be an expert but you may want to check out Sam & Max. It's 3D but it's definitely a fun adventure game (series).

Thanks, I'll check it out. Also I came across a series known as Broken Sword. Part 2 looked cool to me but it looks to be discontinued as for as purchasing availability. Anyone familiar with those games and/or how to get a copy?

I own Broken Sword 1 and 3 but haven't played them yet. Many adventurers hold them in high esteem, though. I think it's in the same vein as the Gabriel Knight games but don't quote me on that. Wouldn't know where to get them. eBay?

Broken Sword is often called "GK-lite." Whether you consider that a good or bad thing is up to you.

As to purchase, search Amazon; new copies of all four titles are available (some even for consoles or handhelds).

I'm one of the rare few who loathes Sam n' Max and Broken Sword. So what do suggest? Hm. Perhaps Ankh? Honestly, though, I'd say that 95% of the adventure games that are released these days are unredeemably awful. Particularly the many euro-adventures that are released these days - games which would still be shoddy even if they received decent translations.

You'll not find anything the even begins to approach the quality of the best Sierra and Lucasarts games.

I own the New Sam and Max, Broken Sword 1-4 and GK1-3 and I must say I like them all. To me I'd each of them better than some of the Sierra Franchises but not all. If you're looking to get into the "Newer" titles I'd suggest Broken Sword III or IV and the New Sam and Max but if 2d is really you're thing Gabriel Knight Sins of the Fathers and Broken Sword 1 can each be found for about 10 bucks on ebay. I wouldn't say that Broken Sword is GK-lite if that so implies that it is easier but I would say they're different in direction. Gabriel Knight although funny is mostly dark and sometimes borders on a sort of a game-noir at times where as Broken sword has a couple dark parts it's still a colorful cheery and also funny adventure. They both appeal to the same audience but in different ways. Also if you haven't already check out the old sam and max. I'd check out Monkey 3 as it's done simmilar to the early Broken Swords but stay away from 4, it's neither funny or imaginative.

You can check out "Flight of the Amazon Queen". The interface is similar to SCUMM. The game was released as a freeware some years ago:

There's also "So Blonde" soon to be released in North America (already released in Europe). I think it was made by the same people from Broken Sword. I can't comment on the game, I haven't played it. I heard some people calling it a Monkey Island ripp-off, but those same people only watched the trailer.

I liked GK but not Broken Sword. It was really just... meh! Not very funny, didn't really go anywhere, just lingered on for too long without much excitement. At the same time, the problem I had with GK Sins of the Father was all the pixel searching required. It drove me mad at times. I'd miss so many items despite clicking on practically everything almost mindlessly. I think Grim Fandango was the most well-done adventure game. Now, it may not be my favorite due to nostalgia for older sierra and lucas titles I had played as a child, but it really is practically flawless.
I've only played the first Sam and Max episode. It was actually kind of decent and it exceeded my expectations. But I've never gotten to playing the rest though. And I still have untouched CDs for Runaway. Is it any good?
