Quest for Glory 5 Install on Xp

#1 Post by Thyme in Lost » Sat Mar 14, 2009 12:04 am

Sorry for asking this here. Not sure where else to ask.
After finishing the updated QFG2, I played QFG3 and I'm now playing QFG4.
As I near the end of 4 I figured I should install QFG5. I know I can, I've done it before, but I don't remember how to on XP.

I've set both the autorun and the setup.exe files to run under compatible 95.
When I use autorun, I see the screen that asks me to install or quit.
If I install using autorun or if I just double kick on setup. Nothing seems to happen.
I can find SETUP.EXE under "Processess" of the Task Manager, but besides that, nothing seems to happen and I'm not sure how to fix the problem.

So can anyone here help me get QFG5 installed on my XP computer?
I have vista on my laptop, I haven't tried it there yet, but for some reason, I doubt it will be easier.
Thanks for any help.

I assume that you have the windows version? Look here:
http://www.geocities.com/qfgs/qfg5/info/misc.html
and here's the download patch link:

As opposed to what other version?

I've already downloaded that patch, but that patched is used after you install QFG5.
I can not get the installation program to work. Therefore that patch doesn't help.

I think there's a dos version. Maybe I am imagining that.

oh, I see.
Try This:
http://www.sierrahelp.com/Games/QuestFo ... AndXP.html
Though I am not sure if it will help you, it seems to just say "install the game".
Do you by chance have an old copy of windows 95/98/me?

No, there is none. There is a Mac version though, although nobody in the right mind would try to install that one on XP, I suppose.

You could try asking at the forums at Sierrahelp.com or QuestForMoreGlory.com.

I think I might of gotten it to work... in a way that should not have worked...

First I installed the game on a different computer in the house with Windows XP.
I then copied over the Sierra folder with QFG5.
I then found that the game would only play, if I did not install any of the patches....

edit:Now I got it to work with the patches...

It only worked because it is an older game and all the files for the game are either on the CD or in game folder.
My computer's register is unaware that I have the game installled, but as long as I use a short cut to the QFG5.exe file to run the game, I'm fine.

ahh that makes sense, as you don;t have the registry entries in there.

There are registry entries, which is why trying to patch the game wasn't working on my machine, it didn't have the proper entries in the registry, but the entries really are not that important for such an old game.

yea, if you go much older, then it doesn't need any registry entries. :p

Which is what gave me the idea to try what I did to get the game to work in the first place.

*Uses foul powers of necromancy on this thread*

I have been struggling with this same problem lately, but haven't managed to reach a solution. So rather then clutter the boards with a new topic I decided to hi-jack this one, if that's alright.

First off, I got error 432 saying that an Uninstallshield was running so the setup for Dragon fire. I seem to be able to solve this by momentarily sending my Uninstall shield into the Recycling bin while I'm running the installation.

I then followed all of the guidelines given here: http://home.planet.nl/~harms646/questforglory5.html%20 I downloaded the game but exited the quick-time setup, extracted the zip files downloaded from the aforementioned site into the SIERRA file created on my computer and ran them both. Then I rebooted the computer, as the installation recommended.

Afterwards, every time I try to play the game it gets past the Sierra FX cutscene and then just closes down. What have I done wrong? Is there anyway I can visit Silmaria again? I haven't been for years.

If I remember correctly, after the Sierra FX cutscene comes the intro, which is a quicktime movie. So you might be having a problem with your quicktime player. Last time I tried Dragonfire (a couple of years ago) I used the latest version of Quicktime and it worked OK, so you might try that.

A good effort, but I'm fairly sure I already downloaded the latest version of Quicktime :(

Thanks for replying though.
