Monkey Island 2 Special Edition
A couple days ago LucasArts said they would release an old and a remade screenshots from the new MI2 Special Edition daily for the next while. Currently they're all going to be from Scabb Island. Here are two so far.

Haha, weren't you two the ones who didn't care for the art direction? Anyway, are there any actual resolution (1920x1080) shots out there? A Google image search didn't turn up anything.

No, I've never been against the art direction. I even like the art from SMI:SE while most people didn't.
And no there aren't any native HD screenshots yet...
EDIT: Here's one in 1280x720.

Brilliant game! Looks like a good remake too!

Re: Monkey Island 2 Special Edition
I wasn't exactly blown away by MI1:SE, and at first I wasn't too thrilled with the looks of MI2:SE. I'm coming around a little bit to liking the look of the released screen shots from MI2:SE. The original MI2's art (handpainted backgrounds) had a lot more distinctive, zany character than the backgrounds in original MI1, and it appears the new hi res art in MI2:SE, similarly, will have more character than what was in MI:SE. Still, when I compare the new MI2:SE hi res art to the original MI2's backgrouds, I can't say I think the improvements are THAT dramatic or even necessary at all, other than to make it playable on newer platforms, which, happily, introduces the games to more people. I suppose there is something to be said for being faithful to the originals, but, as someone who was more than satisfied with the original games, I need more than high res backgrounds (that copy the original paintings) to get me pumped up to play the new releases. It will be interesting to see how it looks animated and to hear the voices, though.gamecreator wrote:Haha, weren't you two the ones who didn't care for the art direction? Re: Monkey Island 2 Special Edition
There's only so much you can go on for the art, remember. I'm waiting for some videos to see (and hear!) how it plays. MI2 is an overall experience. I personally don't think I'm even going to be prepared for it when I finally play it. I'm going to think I already know how it will play but then when I play it it'll blow me away and I'll remember stuff that I'd forgotten and feel that "new" adventure feeling again...even though it's not really new.
Also, newcomers to the game are going to want it in HD or they won't play it. This just isn't for us oldtimers.

Just out of curiosity, can you also switch the voice off in favor of text?

Yes. You can enable subtitles in Special mode and move the speech volume slider all the way down just like in SMI:SE.

What you can't do, at least in MI:SE is play the old version but with voices which I thought would be best of both worlds.

Re: Monkey Island 2 Special Edition
It's been officially stated that you can now have speech in classic mode as well as special mode in MI2:SE. No word on if this feature will ever be added to SMI:SE, though.

This is exciting...and reminds me I need to still finish MI3...
I love the Monkey Island series...and the redesigned graphics look pretty sweet. I think Guybrush's proportions are off, though...but I guess they wanted him to be the same pixel height as the original.

Re: Monkey Island 2 Special Edition
Well, apparently they ARE using some sort of MT-32 emulation for classic mode instead of Adlib emulation. I'm quite impressed. It's not of the same quality as a real MT-32, however. Maybe they're using some kind of soundfont system? Also, they claim that full-working iMuse is present with the digital recordings. I'm quite excited.
Some of the latest videos:
Gameplay demo at E3 abooth - The game in action, some features explained.
Featurette with interviews with the creators of the remake and the original (Ron, Tim, and Dave) - Despite the Woodtick sequence here not being in iMuse, the developers said that the music for this video was just pasted in for thematic effect. The final game does indeed have the fully functioning iMuse system with live recorded instruments. I can't wait to hear it.
Teaser Trailer - MT-32 emulation music in classic mode featured.
Sadly, it still doesn't seem like the original introduction/credit sequence has made it into the remake....hopefully it's still there when you first run the game or something.

Re: Monkey Island 2 Special Edition
I was reading that you can control Guybrush directly (as opposed to point and click, though that option is still there for purists) which I think is cool.
Glad to see these old games getting a new life.
Now if Activision would only make a modern, 3D take on Quest For Glory.....

Re: Monkey Island 2 Special Edition
I'm continually impressed with the level of quality this game has. I keep thinking things like "Oh they'll never do this, but that's ok, I guess" and then and pleasantly surprised to find out they actually DID do it. This is going to be one awesome remake.
Re: Monkey Island 2 Special Edition
I like the aspect on this one, and the trailer also looked quite fun, hehehe.

Only thing that sucks about this is that it doesn't apply to mac gamers even though both games are available on Mac. Or maybe it does, but steam will never tell you.MusicallyInspired wrote:Monkey Island 2 Special Edition on Steam for pre-purchase now. Only $9.99 like the first special edition. Re: Monkey Island 2 Special Edition
The MAC version probably isn't on Steam (yet?). Steam does support Macs now but it might take a while to set up third party Mac titles for Steam. But if you pre-purchased now, you'd own the Mac versions too if they ever came out on Steam (I don't see why they wouldn't, but there has been no official word, so in that light, yes it sucks).
