Gaming's Science Fiction Heroes (Swedish Magazine Artwork)
Look who's on the left there. That's kinda neat.
Re: Gaming's Science Fiction Heroes (Swedish Magazine Artwork)
That one looks like Roger Wilco! He never paid for the spaceship in Sarien.
Re: Gaming's Science Fiction Heroes (Swedish Magazine Artwork)
Looking nice. I also recognize Samus, Fox McCloud, Master Chief and Nei. Not certain about the others though.
Re: Gaming's Science Fiction Heroes (Swedish Magazine Artwork)
There's also Ulala from the Space Channel, the Moais from Gradius, and at the left we have the Space Invaders and Arkanoid. At the bottom, and well hidden, I can discern some "Asteroids", heh. I'm not sure, but behind Ulala there might be a Killrathi from the Wing Commander series.
Re: Gaming's Science Fiction Heroes (Swedish Magazine Artwork)
It sure is! So cool! Are the easter island heads from "Space Harrier?"DrJones wrote:I'm not sure, but behind Ulala there might be a Killrathi from the Wing Commander series.
I love this painting.
Re: Gaming's Science Fiction Heroes (Swedish Magazine Artwork)
I think they are from Gradius 3. Two reasons, their disposition looks like this phase of the game, and also because the ship immediatly above them is the one from Gradius 3.eriqchang wrote:It sure is! So cool! I love this painting.
However, Moais feature in a lot of space-themed games, including Arkanoid II, so it's fair assuming that they stand for a lot of games.

Ahhhh. Gradius. So coooool.
I love this painting.

Re: Gaming's Science Fiction Heroes (Swedish Magazine Artwork)
This is just so beautiful and epic-looking. What I'd also love to see is a similar painting of this caliber with all the big adventure game characters (across the different genres and from various companies) in the same kind of fashion as the one above. That would be amazing. Would something like that (using others' intellectual property) be ok to make and reproduce, as long as the artist isn't charging for it? That you guys know of, has there ever been anything like that?
Re: Gaming's Science Fiction Heroes (Swedish Magazine Artwork)
Well this was, it looks like, for editorial which is fair usage.

Fanart can't be illegal, can it? You can't stop somebody from drawing a picture.
Re: Gaming's Science Fiction Heroes (Swedish Magazine Artwork)
Correct. Editorial usage as on the web for articles, in print for an article about the history of games, etc. is fair use.
Once you place a value (monetary) on an artwork, you are violating trademark and rights-usage laws. And, with a collage like this... you're breaking ten or more licensees! Ouch!!

Re: Gaming's Science Fiction Heroes (Swedish Magazine Artwork)
I'm more referring to pbpb33's post about an adventure game hero collage which would obviously not be for monetary gain, being simply fanart. Not in any magazines or anything.
Re: Gaming's Science Fiction Heroes (Swedish Magazine Artwork)
I was answering your question - fan art is not illegal unless it's sold for profit. So if the artist who drew the above article created it for a Swedish magazine, I'm sure he didn't get sued.
It's a great painting. I want the original on my wall.

I would have preferred the classic mysterious version of Samus instead of the bimbo, but oh, well.
Roger looks great.

What, the second Samus takes off the helmet revealing she's a blonde-haired woman, she becomes a bimbo? How rude.Spikey wrote:I would have preferred the classic mysterious version of Samus instead of the bimbo, but oh, well.

Actually, in Metroid Fusion she takes more off than just her helmet.
The better you play the game, the more undressed she becomes, I remember.
example of ingame ending;
Samus: "I've come a looooong way y'all"

Actually, she did that in just about every Metroid game ever depending on how fast you beat the game.

Actually, not on the NES, right? Also, the Prime & Super Metroid endings are less uhm...revealing, graphical....can't put my finger on it.

Yes, on the NES. That's where the craze started. You can get her helmet off, get her down to a one-piece suit, and also a two-piece bikini. Also on Return of Samus (GB), Super Metroid (though admittedly not as much here), and Fusion. In Prime 1 all she does it take her helmet off (she leaves it on if you don't beat it under a certain time or don't get all the items or something) and she doesn't look like as much of a fashion model. Nintendo made Retro change that for Prime 2, though, turning her into a Japanese pop star.

Yeah, I remember the Prime ending very well, very stylish.
I never played II thouroughly, but 'Japanese popstar' IS a fitting description.
After I saw it in Fusion, I prefer helmet on. The graphic from the magazine is actually very nice.

Re: Gaming's Science Fiction Heroes (Swedish Magazine Artwork)
Considering the nature of most video game leads (especially back in the NES days), the simple fact that "Samus is a Girl" is actually rather impressive; she's one of the real contenders for the first action heroine/non-damsel roles in gaming. Granted, the end-game artwork in Fusion and Zero Mission can get a little fanservicey, but overall, it's been pretty tasteful (at least in official circles). The added endgame artworks for Fusion in Japan (accessible elsewhere in the world by linking Zero Mission with Fusion) actually serve to expand the backstory of Samus. Also, I'm rather partial to the "Hard Mode with 15% or less" image from Zero Mission:

Can't see the image, Brain.

Isn't that a sexist comment?Spikey wrote:I would have preferred the classic mysterious version of Samus instead of the bimbo, but oh, well.
I'm just teasing you, considering a discussion in another thread.

Don't really think his comment was sexist. But sometimes I wonder which would be better dating Samus or looking like her. I mean without the armored suit definitely not my style. Unless I could transform it from a armored suit to a pink silk mini dress with black lace lining and ribbons.... *sigh*pbpb33 wrote:Isn't that a sexist comment?Spikey wrote:I would have preferred the classic mysterious version of Samus instead of the bimbo, but oh, well.

But then again in space anything could happen.
Edit oh BTW guys Samus take off more than just the helmet depending on how much time you spend on the all the games. I got this from another web site so I hope I don't get in trouble it's from the first metroid ending. If it's against the rules let me know and I'll delete it.
