#1 Post by Spikey » Mon Jun 28, 2010 10:15 pm

For those of you interested, I started recording the KQVII General Midi soundtrack through my brand new ol'd Roland SC-55. Started with chapter I! Here's some early results in mp3 format.

Nice work! How did you record these, directly from the game or from SCI Viewer?

Thanks!

I recorded them from SCI Viewer. Set up is Computer 1 > USB-MIDI cable > SC-55 > Line > Computer 2.
SCI Viewer, of course, has the disadvantage of hours of searching in a huge mess of files for the right themes. Anybody who is interested in the list I'm constructing, send me a pm. So far, I've only indexed the first two chapters, so it's not that much yet =S.

Recording music in KQ7 in-game sounds attractive for avoiding the messy index, but has the disadvantage of fade-ins on EVERY track, and shifts in volume during dialogue. I can't really fathom why they decided upon fade-ins at the start of every track, because the tracks clearly don't seem to be composed for that. Correcting the volume shifts is much more work (for me), so, the index it is.

Next up are the alternative, unused themes for chapter 1, like the desert, the bottom of the well and the desert storm! Already recorded them, will post time when I get back from work. Am starting to doubt which 'bottom of the well' is the right one, the one I posted could be the alternative (even though superior imho).

There's a lot of files in here that are unused. Some sound like early experiments, others like overdone elaborations. These are among the files close to chapter one, but I may encounter more later;

Desert main theme: alternate
http://www.sendspace.com/file/3jnpqh

Desert main theme: alternate II
http://www.sendspace.com/file/1jwn80

Bottom of the Well: alternate
http://www.sendspace.com/file/pbtivj

Desert Storm: alternate
http://www.sendspace.com/file/8v9coj

Btw, encountered another Jackalope theme, which sounds like the real chasing theme instead of the one I posted earlier.

Thanks! I've always wanted it in mp3. Cannot wait for the rest of the themes (that is, if you plan to upload more) :D

No, I was planning to upload half of it, just to leave you wanting more. Jk, I'm glad somebody likes it. Even though the sorting is detrimental for my psychological health, the recording is a wholesome business. I think I'll take requests after I finish this project.

PS: long time no see, Vil ;)

I indeed like it and cannot wait for the rest. As a game soundtrack, it's one of my very top favorites. =) So my appreciation of your effort is naturally great. Long time no see indeed ;)

Chapter III; this is where the music is getting really interesting. Can you say "baroque meets neo-renaissance?" It's the word pisspump hundred times in a row, only better. I guess we have the backdrop of the tragic peacefulness of the Bountiful Woods and the hysterical Fifi le Yip Yap to thank for the atmosphere in these songs. Enjoy.

The Bountiful Woods;
I don't know why there's five of them, they all seem similar and I've no idea which one is actually used, though I haven't listened that closely just yet. They were probably experimenting with this massive piece, one of the most important themese in the entire game. What makes this so interesting is that the main instrument seems to change throughout the song, from horn to flute to string ensemble to harpsichord to guitar and what not.

Lord Attis:
Another impressive theme from this chapter.

Lord Attis: alternate
Don't think this one is used in-game, but I could be wrong.
It's much longer than the real theme, and as great.

Forest of the Werefolk:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/gcfvzz

the Red Spider:
Sounds like a reprise of the Scorpion theme

the Falderal Gates:

Archduke Fifi le Yip Yap:
Fifi is such a weird person. This Vienna Waltz suits him just fine!
http://www.sendspace.com/file/908zqu

Archduke Fifi le Yip Yap:
An alternate theme, I think unused. It kind of sucks compared to the one they used.

Fifi's other themes
There's a lot of them, I don't know which ones are used in-game and which ones are not.
I looped some of them 2x, because most of them are very short.

the Town of Falderal
What a wonderful 3/4 minute...the use of different instruments is really interesting

China Shop: Fernando's theme

the Faux Shop

the Snake Oil Salesman

China Shop: Treasure's Return
Sounds a littlebit too happy a return, but oh well

the River of Life:

the Magical Stairway Room
So unexpectedly refreshing!! Reminds me a bit of climbing the Sacred the Mountain in KQ6.

Fifi's Study
Sounds like a reprise of Treasure's Return on harpsichord.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/v75x9r

the Powder Room
A reprise of the Town's main theme, kind of great actually!

Hummingbird theme:http://www.sendspace.com/file/lozbj6

I, too, think the music of the third chapter is delightful. How wonderful of you to have done all of this! :D What an effort this must have been for you!
They were probably experimenting with this massive piece, one of the most important themese in the entire game.
I couldn't agree more! As a kid, I fell in love with the game mainly because of that theme. Not that the rest of the game wasn't superb as well, only that theme was quite enchanting. :) I could just sit and listen to it, while poor Valanice had nothing to do but smell the flowers around. And yeah, worry for Rosella.
