Inspired by this initiative, want to introduce myself

#1 Post by DeClawd » Fri Feb 17, 2012 3:06 pm

Hello Adventure Game Enthusiasts,

Oh the nostalgia! I came across this site, and am so happy there are others out there with a passion to revive this wonderful genre of gaming.

I remember from Sierra's "Loom" through "Quest for Glory IV: Shadows of Darkness" nothing but good times.

My name is Rob, I am a husband, father, and an avid gamer currently playing League of Legends. I have dabbled with programming from Basic, Turbo Pascal, to now teaching myself some C++. I am starting to get the hang of animating sprites within my code, and would LOVE to be part of creating an adventure game to help revive this genre.

So hello all, glad to find a place to drop some ideas, and pick them up!

Hi, DeClawd! Hope you feel comfortable in here!

I think I went exactly the same route as you, though I visited the Basic of the C64 before that. Unfortunately (or fortunately), the games made by AGD Interactive don't make use of C++, they are made instead with Adventure Game Studio, a program designed specifically to create adventure games, though there are several other engines available. AGS has the advantage of being free to download and it became open source recently, so that more people can contribute to its code.

The AGDi boards are somewhat dormant these weeks, but we're working right now on the next Himalaya Project, which is going to be an hybrid adventure/RPG in the style of Quest for Glory. Hope we get to release it this year! :)

That sounds awesome, that adventure game studio, is it available for download in a portable format so I can mess with it on my non-administrator work PC?

No idea, but you can find the program here.

Thanks for the link, I'll see if I can get it to run. Otherwise I might need to invest in a laptop to do some scripting on the side!

(Loom was by LucasArts, not Sierra.)
