Internet only games will not revive the Adventure genre...

#1 Post by Toadie2004 » Wed Aug 08, 2001 6:27 pm

As much as we all will hate to admit it, but an online-only adventure game will not revive the adventure genre...but a corporate one will. I know that the Anonymous Game Developers don't want any money to exchange hands...but the game download, not to mention the voice pack, is a little to big to swallow for some people.

I believe that if approached, there is no reason for Sierra NOT to distribute the King's Quest VGA Remake. I mean think about it, with in house games, they spend thousands, if not millions of dollars on artist, programmers, etc... to produce the game. By doing this, it means that they must take in MORE money on the game then they spent to produce it. That is why the Kings Quest VGA remake would never be made by Sierra, but here we have a complete remake, which has quality graphics and even voiced dialog. Why WOULDN'T Sierra distribute it? They did not spend ANY money to produce this game, therefore profit is guaranteed.

In addition, with an adventure game being released by a mainstream company other companies may begin producing them. You could still offer the game online and only charge a small fee for the Boxed CD version in stores (I was thinking something in the range of $15-$20, which would also increase the number of sales that would be made as opposed to charging $40-$60 as with most games) as well as half the profits would go to the AGD (Anonymous Game Developers) but of course all that would have to be worked out with Sierra.

Perhaps it is just wishful thinking that a true adventure game would be release into stores, although I think it is a good idea.

I forgot to add that if any one cares to e-mail me with their opinions (or what happens with my idea...damn ISP always kicks me off) my e-mail is Toadie_2004@hotmail.com

Thanks!

(Also I dowloaded the Kq1 Remake last night and started playing it this morning...GREAT JOB! I really do consider this to be quality material, and would really like to see it in stores, as would some of my friends who don't have internet connections. Like I said before, you could always leave it online to dowload for free and just offer the CD as means to obtain it for those who don't want to download it or can't...I really do think that Sierra would accept expecially givin the fact that one of you have worked with them before...Keep up the god work with RQ too!)

We're glad you like the game! You made some good points here! Ineteresting....

Actually, we were talking about this very subject amongst ourselves not long ago! The feeling was that none of us Anonymous game creators would have any problem if Sierra did want distribute our VGA version of KQ1. It's their game after all... The only problem would be the fact that the AGS engine isn't our own work. We didn't create the engine. And that being the case the game is also half Chris Jones' work (he's the creator of the freeware engine we used). So, by sierra charging money for it.. it would not be courteous, and probably not look too good for sierra either. SO I think they'd probably steer clear of it.

Besides, sierra would be unlikely to release an adventure game that wasn't created using their SCI engine and programmed/tested by their own staff mambers. As soon as sierra (or any compnay) releases a new product, they have to set up technical support for it, which costs them money. And to set up tech suppoort for a VGA game these days (even one that Sierra spent zero dollars on themselves) just wouldn't end up being lucrative for them at all. Also, even voice acting in commercial games has to go through the unions.

And yep, it's going to take much more than just one fanmade adventure game to revive the genre.. but, never say never.. it's a start<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/uanonymousgame ... >Anonymous Game Creator 2 at: 8/8/01 2:47:20 pm

Let the Remakes begin...

#4 Post by Toaide2004 » Thu Aug 09, 2001 11:14 am

Well seeing as how distribution by Sierra is out of the picture, and the fact that not just one (or even two) fan made games, despite the superb quality of them, will revive the genre, then we must act. We should start remaking all the old classics that companies do not make profit off of anymore, ESPECIALLY the SIERRA classics (seeing as how they're just so damn good :-)) I would love to see/help with a remake of Space Quest 2 and 3 (I do admit I still have yet to finish SQ2, the typing really frustrates me, I have horrible spelling...lol) but SQ3 is a GREAT game (and I've finished it) If all the fan made games where to the quality of your guy's games (no I'm not trying to suck up, I really think that they are quality games) plus a little added attention and coverage could go a long way in reviving the genre.

I truly think and hope that adventure point and clicks are like pop music, that they will experience a short death only to be reborn again with a sharper look. (Also, I do not like pop music, its just a good example) Well anyway keep up the good work.

--Toadie

about selling the game...

#8 Post by Frogman » Mon Aug 13, 2001 4:21 am

IF you had sierra's permission, they could sell the game, why not? i have AGS and Chris Jones wrote that you could sell the game if you gave him a copy or told him where he could download it. how is that discourtious? unless there's something i don't know about, which there probably is.

Let the CD Mag's be your guide...

#9 Post by Toadie2004 » Mon Aug 13, 2001 8:49 am

I've seen this idea some other palces and just thought i'd put it in here, so all you who are religiously checking my topic will hear it (if any of you exist that is <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> )

Why NOT give a copy to the CD Mag's to distrubute? (Mags like Computer Games, PC Gamer, etc...) It wouldnt be breaking any more copyright laws then you already are. Plus I *HIGHLY* doubt that Sierra would take action or even care, hell they probley already know! It would be a great way to distibure a great game to a larger audiance (with the voice pack no less) as well as it wouldnt hurt the image of the fan-made community (or Royal Quest for that matter <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> ) There are people who see your game or hear it from a friend and say "Wow, they made this with free shtuff, I'ma get me somea that." How many *more* you think would say that (or something meaning the same thing) if they saw it in a magazine CD. It would be great PR for you guys, Chris Jones (The father of the AGS community...I salute you <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> ), and all the other members of the AGS community.

--Toadie
Toadie_2004@hotmail.com

I'm positive that Sierra already knows about this game. We're not worried about them finding out, because it's far too late for that. We never kept our game hidden from them, because we're not doing this behind their back, or in secret. If they had wanted to shut us down or were very opposed to it, they already would have. We just wanted to be somewhat respectable and not try to overstep our boundries. But, perhaps they wouldn't mind if we tried putting it on magazine covers. Enough of you have brought up this topic. I'm not going to go behind anybody's back to do this, but perhaps we can try to talk to some people and see if there is any chance of doing this in a legitimate way. We'll look into this, and see if Sierra or magazines will have any problems with this. If not, maybe it can be an option....

Milan Easton

yes yes yes! talk to the mags or sierra or whatever, and also when are you going to do the "mirror" thing so you can download the game in smaller parts?

Sorry, but the way the install program works, doesn't allow us to break the game into smaller parts.

SQ Incerations

#13 Post by Toadie 2004 » Wed Aug 15, 2001 10:50 pm

I was looking around the web and I found a site for a game called Space Quest Incerations. *Most* of the sript is done, as well as some of the graphics (which dont really fit and would most likely need to be redone) Anyways, the project has been abandoned and all their files were on their site. I was wonding if you guys wanted to team up wiht me and finish it off? Or anyone else for that matter...just post in here, send me an e-mail, or contact me on MSN Messenger (just use the e-mail address to track me down, but you already knew that right <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> ) Thanks

--Toadie
Toadie_2004@hotmail.com

How about posting the URL for that site, so we can have a look at it.

BTW, for those interested in fan made games, here's a couple of good URLs for other games that have been done:

qfg2001.cjb.net
Quest For Glory 4 1/2 - So You Thought You Were a Hero

frostbyte ...
Space Quest - The Lost Chapter

<a href="http://www.rtsoft.com/dink/pages/home.h ...
Dink Smallwood

Here is the *old* sight for the project.

ww ...

I BELEIVE it contains all the files for the project that once was. The site does tend to be down occasionally and what not. I am in the process of contacting Datadogg (the original leader of the project, back in '9<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... lasses.gif ALT="8)"> and getting offical permission to take over the project. I personally dont like the way they were taking the graphics and will most likely create new ones or rip them out of Space Quest 6 (or a combination fo both) and some of the plot may need minor tweeking for it to fit the Space Quest universe, but otherwise its pretty good. I also am in contact with Diane who was also another leading person during the project (she is also the person who has the most posts on the SubSpace Channel (a fourm devoted to Space Quest...she has almost twice as many as the person in 2nd.)) Well I appreciate any help.

--Toadie
Toadie_2004@hotmail.com

Plain and simple! Sometimes games are not meant to revive any particular genre such as the adventure one, but only to allow it to keep on living.

yeah, there are 5 QG fangames being made, not including all the stuff Tierra is doing, plus there are freeware programs out there like AGS that are very easy to learn and make quality games, so i dunno, but i do know i prefer downloading free games rather than buying new games that probably won't be nearly as good.

The link that Toadie 2004 was talkign about is to the Space Quest, Incinerations project.
If was a valiant attempt to creat a space quest game, but was plagued with many difficulties, not least of which was it's over abundance of developers.

As it was made clear in a previous thread, more developers != better products.

While I'm not directly connected with their project,
I have read a lot about it, and talked with many of the members involved. They were good people, but it took over a year to get the script out, and people lost interest.
It would have worked much better with only one head writer.
To bring this back on Topic, I don't think they will ever be releasing anything that you could distribute. The team has disbanded, and the project is dead.

Colin "It's a waste." Davis
