4 vs. 8 Direction EGO

#1 Post by Athug » Tue Jul 16, 2002 11:58 pm

Just a suggestion for KQ1VGA 3.0, if it's possible- have Graham be able to walk in 8 directions rather than 4. I don't know if it's worth the time of animating (and I know making animations takes up tremendous amounts of time), but I think it would enhance how the game looked.

I believe that, since the Graham sprite used in KQ1VGA was taken from the KQ5 sprite which only had 4-way animation, Tierra only did a 4-way animation. Come to think of it, most of the early VGA games from Sierra only had 4-way. The first one I can think of with 8-way was QFG1VGA. *Thinks harder*...anyone else? KQ6 had it, didn't it?

~Wolfgang

8-direction movement and KQ1

#6 Post by guestserf » Sun Dec 29, 2002 10:51 am

This post doesn't really contain any spoilers but if you don't want to read any references at all to events in KQ1 or Police Quest then skip it <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

I have what I thought was the original EGA version of KQ1 and it definitely has the diagonals on the corner numbers of the keypad - turn off numlock - and the handy "stop moving whichever direction you're going in" on 5.

The diagonals make the cave staircase to/from the cloudland very easy whereas I guess it isn't without them (at least the UHS hints say the staircase is as difficult as the beanstalk and that seems ridiculous to me, if I use the diagonals I barely need to adjust my direction at all or maybe only a quick nudge once per screen).

Also it took me a while to work out that the diagonals existed when I played my first Sierra game, which was Police Quest 1, and it made driving on the freeway very difficult and the walk upstairs before the end is almost impossible to do fast enough without them; if you dawdle and let the criminal get too far ahead of you he decides you're messing him around and you die.

Apologies if the comment about it not being there in earlier games doesn't apply to the original EGA quests or if I don't know my Sierra chronology well enough. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... rassed.gif ALT=":o">

Sure, they can move diagonally, but does it show a different 'sprite' of the character

In QfG2, there was on to face each direction

NW N NE
W E
SW S SE

In the earlier EGA games, they only had one for N, S, E and W, but you could still use the diagonal movement keys, just no special sprite for it.

ah... oops. you are, of course, right, and I feel extremely foolish. *cough* <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... rassed.gif ALT=":o">

now I understand better, you would probably have to work very hard to get it to look just right and fit in with the existing directions, and if it didn't then it would be a lot worse than the current situation, imho. but I should keep quiet... where is my stone to crawl back under? ah yes... <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/eyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes">

It's diagonal movement enough, even if the sprite shows them moving sideways or up. I remember it distinctly from KQV.

Space Quest 4 also had 8-directional sprites. At least for Roger, but not for anyone else IIRC.

Don't go out the same way you did the last time
You'll break when you fall
Don't make the same mistakes you did all over
You've got to believe in yourself this time

So all of the QFG's except Hero's quest 1 had 8-way directional. Also, KQ6 and KQ7 had it.
The Knight

I think they ripped it. I heard about that on other threads here..? I don't remember how they explained the procedure though.. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/eyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes">

The only thing I've found to rip graphics from KQ5 is SCIDecoder. You should be able to find it with a google search. It's a very basic DOS based program. Basically it allows you to pull up each frame of an animation one at a time. While it's up, you have to take a screenshot with your "Print Screen" key. Go to your favorite image editor (MS Paint will do) and create a new image. From there just click edit and paste. The screen shot will appear in your new image and all you have to do is crop it down to size. This is a really time taking way of doing it, but it works. I believe this is how AGD2 ripped the graphic. I asked the same question a long long time ago and that was his answer. Hope that helps!

"Without the fleet, the contest would be on our home grounds, and war is one contest in which it is best to be on the visiting team." -ADM Nimitz

While it would be nice. I don't think it really matters too much. It really dosen't bother me wether it does or dosen't have 8-way, or 4-way.
The Knight

i think you should do it 8 way because it looks the best like that instead of the character walking on a angle

Like The Knight said, it doesn't really matter to me. As long as Graham can walk around, then that is fine. This sort of thing would be more of a want than a neccessity to make KQ1VGA 3.0 a good game...but, it's already a good game, so in that case...<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

i doubt..................................................

#22 Post by The Knight » Fri Apr 25, 2003 1:13 am

I doubt it will be done since KQ2:RTS version 2.0 only has 4-way. And it is the final version. If they were going to do 8-way for KQ1VGA, then they would have waited until the 8-way animations were done then release it.
The Knight
