You should have stopped at the hints. If this forum is used for giving out copy protection, it would not be good for Tierra.

Yeah, copy protections are something Sierra is still iffy about after all those years. That's why we'd prefer not to have copy protection codes swapped here. Thanks.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashs ...

Though I own two copies of this game on CD, one on disk (Giving me three manuals), I can still beat the Cliffs of Logic without the book, lol!

This message brought to you by BTails

Although, If you happen to have the original CD, you can contact Kimmie at Sierra Planet and answer a quick little quiz to get the copy protection, since she has permission to give it out if you provide proof that you do own the game.
- King Orion

" W o.O p ? I should scan mine...

#6 Post by MTKnight » Thu Dec 12, 2002 1:01 am

It's looking very much worse for wear, and I don't want to lose it. What really bugs me, though, is that I scratched my QfQ4 disc (voices skip, so I threw it out), yet still have the manual. Recently found my KQ5 and Dynamix flight sim discs in a totally unrelated box, too--very odd.

Yea I used to hate the Copy Protection in older PC games. Anybody remember the game Gold Rush? It was the worst, you had to read a whole article every freakin time you played the game. The answer wasn't always directly stated you had to actually think about it some. I later found a crack for it (remember I had, well still have, a legal copy of this game) but the crack screwed it up. IF you use the crack you lose the intro movie, and also if you change the speed the in game timer stops. The in game timer is required cause you won't ever get your letter from your brother or be able to leave town.

Copy protection stuff is evil <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":p"> . KQ6 isn't so bad. It's sort of logically incorporated in the game and it's easy to write down for when you get to that part (which is only once per game). But KQ4's copy protection means you have to look through the manual every single time you start the game.

True. The Kq4 one is really annoying. For a while I had lent the booklet and the CDs to a friend and once I felt like playing Kq4 and had to reconsider because of the copyprotection! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":\">

<td nowrap style=filter:glow(color="mintcream", strength=#+15)> Lira Lindriel - - - - - - - Magic is real - unless defined integer!

Backyard Discussions ~x~ Lira's Duchy ~x~ My poems, stories and tags

Worst Copy Protecton was Kings Quest 3. I never did finish that game cause I never could get this 1 spell right. You had to have the manual in order to say the proper things to cast spells. Even with the manual there was this 1 spell that I just never could get right. I typed the thing out just like it said every time but it still screwed up.

Maybe Tierra will make us a remake that don't require you to type that part out <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin">

My manual for KQ3 contained really bad errors, too. I finally found the copyprotection online somewhere, so I could do the storm-spell.

<td nowrap style=filter:glow(color="mintcream", strength=#+15)> Lira Lindriel - - - - - - - Magic is real - unless defined integer!

Backyard Discussions ~x~ Lira's Duchy ~x~ My poems, stories and tags

KQ5 was the one that annoyed me the most, in terms of readability - those symbols, aaaughh!!

But the thing that really got me about KQ2 and KQ3 was that they insisted on the original disk being in the drive to play. I own legal purchased copies, but it meant having to dig the box out of the closet and put the disk in whenever I wanted to play, instead of just being able to run it off my hard drive. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/eyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes">

KQ5 symbols? I own the King's Quest Collection. It came with a sheet that had symbols for KQ5, but I have never used them. Are they only for copy protection? Maybe when they put together the collection, they took out the copy protection...? Oh well, just wondering.

Perhaps the symbols were only used for the floppy disc version. I have the CD-rom version and I don't even remember any symbols. I haven't played it in years, though.

Only the disk version required a copy protection. Sierra's logic at that time was that only a complete numbskull would bother putting a whopping 100 MB on his hard disk. (excuse me while I snicker) That's why they removed the copy protections in a few of their CD-games. Contrary to the timer-errors, this case is an example of the fact that Sierra not looking forward as much as they should also has its benefits. Although I'd take a copy protection over a timer-error any time of the day.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashh ...

I agree. At least the copy-protection is only a minor annoyance. The timer-errors render the game completely unplayable. (Unless you use a program like mo-slo, but don't even get me started on those things)

Sierra's logic? Why would they distribute copyright protection for the disk version in the cd version package? That doesn't sound like logic to me...

The disk versions didn't require the CD and thus could be put on floppies and spread. CD-versions of the game were too big at that time to be copied and Sierra saw the size as a decent protection.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/nashg ...

I think they were asking, if there was no copy protection on the CD version, then why package in a sheet with the copy-protection symbols on it, if they were never needed during the game.

For which I have no good answer... just completeness? since it came with the original floppy version? *shrugs*

My own KQ-collection has a french disk version of KQ5 in addition to the voiceover-version of the game. (too bad it froze near the final confrontation) Thus, you needed the symbols if you decided to play that one.

I'm not so sure about the other KQ-collections, they might just have copy-pasted the manual of the first KQ-collection. (the first one was the KQ collector's edition with KQ1...6 which I own)

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashu ...

That's the version that I own also. I have never played the French version, seeing as I don't speak French. I didn't realize it was the disk version. That makes sense. Thank you, Erpy.

I only needed the symbols if the CD wasn't in the drive while I was playing Kq5. But they were really annoying! If you took too long with searching for the correct symbol, the symbol where the cursor was on would get selected by itself. Took me quite a while to figure out I could deselect it by selecting it again! In the meantime poor Graham died quite a few times! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":p">

<td nowrap style=filter:glow(color="mintcream", strength=#+15)> Lira Lindriel - - - - - - - Magic is real - unless defined integer!

Backyard Discussions ~x~ Lira's Duchy ~x~ My poems, stories and tags

I feel bad for Graham, Lira.
Poor old timer who's gone on another adventure to save his family from an evil wizard whose brother was changed into a Cat by Alexander and will feed Graham's family to the Cat if Alexander will not change him back who also has a darn owl that is more chicken than owl and almost dies in the end Graham.
The Knight

I was just giving Graham a long description, that's it, just the facts. That's the point of KQ5 isn't it?
The Knight
