Anastasia (Spoiler)

#1 Post by malekdarshin » Mon Jan 13, 2003 3:53 pm

Was Anastasia in the original King's Quest 2? I've never played it, and I think that what happened to her was just wrong! I mean really, she was just a kid! Isn't that why Count Caldaur waited until his wife was about to die before he changed her? I'm not complaining mind, Anastasia is a very cool character. That had to have been quite a shock for Graham, checking out some hot Vampire chick then finding out she was that little girl he was watching sleep about an hour before. Maybe Anastasia's grandmother made the count change Anastasia before she would allow the Count to change her. I was just wondering what Anastasia would be like 50 years after the game took place. I'm sure she would always be childlike.

Coffins drowned in roses
And the war he chose is
Fought inside the mind
Death becomes compelling
When the soul's for selling
And the world is blind

In the maze he wanders
Looks about and ponders
shadows mock and taunt him
And the ghosts that haunt him
Chain him to the ground
Screams without a sound
Burn the castle down

<a href="http://pub49.ezboard.com/fgaminggroundz ... <img src="http://malekdarshin.homestead.com/files/junki.gif" style="border:0;"alt="The Junki Knights of Junkyardia."/>

In the original, Little Red Riding hood only appeared in one instance. She popped up randomly in certain "forest"-screens and she'd tell you she lost her basket. After getting the basket for her (which was hidden in Grandma's mailbox) she'd give you the flowers and she'd hop right out of your life never to return.

And yes, the whole thing with Anastasia is slightly controversial. If you want to read a discussion about it, we had a debate about it a while back in <a href="http://pub57.ezboard.com/froyalquestfor ... thread. The bottom line is, however, that it was done to reunite the family, not to turn them into monsters. (KQ2+'s portrayal of vampires isn't very monster-like after all)

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/nashg ...

That was a huge thread! I read most of the posts. If Wookie is still around, (Which I'm sure he/she is.) I'd really like to take to them. The Anastasia character just has me intrigued.

Coffins drowned in roses
And the war he chose is
Fought inside the mind
Death becomes compelling
When the soul's for selling
And the world is blind

In the maze he wanders
Looks about and ponders
shadows mock and taunt him
And the ghosts that haunt him
Chain him to the ground
Screams without a sound
Burn the castle down

<a href="http://pub49.ezboard.com/fgaminggroundz ... <img src="http://malekdarshin.homestead.com/files/junki.gif" style="border:0;"alt="The Junki Knights of Junkyardia."/>

The reason why the Count also transformed possum is because, it whould only be her with no one to take care of her. And also with the brotherhood after that family. You whouldn't want possum all alone with the brotherhood after her.
The Knight

Yeah, Wookie is still around. I believe he mentioned here once that there was a possibility that Anastasia would make a reappearance if he'd ever get around to writing a novel to conclude his plot. Keep your hopes up. And yes, Anastasia rules. For those people who think she's hot; she's also dead AND underage......

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashm ...

Since her age is never revealed(she could just be under(or she could be the same age as she was as a little girl.).). So I don't know if she is or isn't.
The Knight

Okay now I have to think of what to say so I don't come off sounding stupid. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

So I start with a compliment. I finished the game is morning at a little after 4 am. It was a bit passed my bedtime, but I was into the game pretty deep. The additions to the plot and the puzzles kept me playing. In other words I really enjoyed the game.
The reason I wanted to talk to you is because I'm a writer myself. An unpublished writer but then again 98% of "writers" are. Anyway, as I said before I'm intrigued by the Anastasia character. How old was Possum, eight, when she was turned? She lost everything in such a short amount of time. Her parents, her youth, any chance for a normal life, the sun. I think she has even lost her Grandmother, because now that the Count is back in her life and now that she's a vampire, Anastasia would be lost in the background most times. And besides the woman that is her Grandmother now isn't the woman that Anastasia knew. I believe that fifty years after the story in the game took place, Anastasia would have finally become a woman in mind as she is in body. She would always be child-like, but she grew cold, distant, and a bit of a spoiled brat. She is a perfect tragic character, and would be great as the catalyst for a spin-off game. From a distance a woman like that could make a man do about anything, but things might be different when that man got to know her.
Basically I'm trying to talk you into doing a spin-off of the plot you have made in QK2VGA while keeping the same dark atmosphere.

Anyway, good job to everyone involved.

Coffins drowned in roses
And the war he chose is
Fought inside the mind
Death becomes compelling
When the soul's for selling
And the world is blind

In the maze he wanders
Looks about and ponders
shadows mock and taunt him
And the ghosts that haunt him
Chain him to the ground
Screams without a sound
Burn the castle down

<a href="http://pub49.ezboard.com/fgaminggroundz ... <img src="http://malekdarshin.homestead.com/files/junki.gif" style="border:0;"alt="The Junki Knights of Junkyardia."/>

I agree with you! Wouldn't it be cool if Anastasia had her own game. A vampire, searching the world for a chance to resume/restore her physical humanity (though my vampires can retain their humanity regardless - it's just a different way of life... or death... or something) would make a great story.
Set within a medievil, fantasy land (with no reference to the KQ world at all if I ever wanted to sell it), Anastasia - would have to travel for centuries, always by night, and never knowing who to trust - and being hunted constantly by those who believe, because she is a vampire, that she is evil (like some people on the forums!)
There's some good stuff there. Definitely food for thought.

This is defintiely something I would love to revist at some point. However, I'm going to be a tad busy for a little while on other things. (Vague enough for you?) <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">
Between the Count and Anastasia, I think they provided some of the 'meat and potatoes' of the KQ2 remake.

Oh yeah... glad you enjoyed it!

Oh, come off it, Wookie! I didn't say all vampires are evil, I said they are USUALLY evil unless stated otherwise, and you didn't bother much on stating otherwise on KQ2+ <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek">
Anyway, regardless of their evil/not evil nature, the act of turning a young child into a vampire (when there is obviously a better solution) is something we would never have seen on an actual KQ. I think on that part you just went along and fulfilled your own dark vampiric fantasies <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/eyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes">

And another thing that came to my mind - does the fact that the coins from Daventry's magic chest have the portrait of the First King on them, mean that he's the one who enchanted the Daventry treasures in the firstplace?

I didn't mention you personally, Storm... but you are dear to my heart all the same. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

I'm not a fan of labelling characters "good" or "evil", as I don't believe in the concepts in their undiluted forms. Though obviously most characters in many games/stories will fall into one or the other category. It's really up to the player to decide whether the Count, for example, is an evil guy, a good guy with some controversial moral perspectives, a curious mixture of "good" and "evil" attributes... or something else entirely!

You're right. We never saw a child-turned-vampire in an official King's Quest game. That's not to say we never WOULD have, though, had the KQ series continued.
But honestly, I don't know how to define true KQ anymore. Between KQ7 and MOE (while disregarding arguments as to whether the later is a true KQ), we are exposed to just about every conceivable style and tone. From Disney-esque to hints of conspiracy (thanks to Jane Jenson) to hack'n'slash. Somewhere in there, I think there is plenty of room for my "dark vampriristic fantasies".

As for the First King... his backstory has him being the source of all (or most) magic in Daventry. At least all the good stuff. His story is quite grandiose (not to mention tragic), and wasn't something I could fit into the KQ2 remake - the game was about Kolyma, after all. So I settled for a compromise, and referenced past events in places. I'm pleased it piqued your curiosity!

Be cool. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... lasses.gif ALT="8)">

Oh please people, being a vampire is not so bad. If you want to, you cand iscuss these things at my "I love vamps" post. OK, Anastasia may have grown up in a short time, but she will never grow old or die, unless killed by special means. She can't get sick and she doesn't have to worry about her grandmother dying. She gets to live in the castle, which is her ancestral home. Vampires have super strength and heightened senses. If you've ever read Interview with the Vampire or seen the movie, than you know about Claudia, a little girl who was turned into a vampire. She could never grow up because vampires stay the same age they are when they are turned. (This varies according to different authors, and there's always those people who are born vampires.)
Depending on how you look at it, it is a gift the count has given her, though a double-edged gift, it could be a curse as well. I must admit I was disapointed with how werewolves are portrayed, the hero of my novel gets turned into a werewolf, and he enjoys it after he gets used to it.

The reason the count did it was because, since the grandmother was near death. So, he turns her into a vampire. Now, he couldn't just leave Possum to live by herself. Also, with the brotherhood after them. He did what he thought he should do.
The Knight

He could have just as easily just took Possum to the castle, alive.
