A Dutch, according to the name <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> Although he lives in SA, he probably was born, or his parents, in Holland...

I think we should stick with the walkthrough of Erpy (the Dutch who made the FIRST WALKTHROUGH <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":p"> ). Cause Erpy put lots of efforts in order to make this Walkthrough, so I suggest this thread to be closed, sorry Broomie <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/grin.gif ALT=" >D">

Umm, you DO know that the common language in SA is dutch, right? As ashamed I am to admit it, the notorious phrase in SA "apartheid" is a dutch word.

That walkthrough was published a week or so after the game's release. (the author wrote a walkthrough for KQ1VGA that was posted on the old qknowledge-site) It wasn't the first one that was written. (mine was) But it WAS the first one to be published.

It's indeed a fool-proof guide, but not the kind of walkthrough I advocate nor the kind of solution I was trying to turn my own FAQ into. Walkthroughs that tell you exactly what to do and even where to walk take away most of the fun of playing an adventure.

I guess it's okay to post it since we have our own official walkthrough on the site now, but I personally don't really support it because it spoils too much, IMHO.

<img src="http://httpd.chello.nl/c.vanempel/Nashb ...

"...it spoils too much...", well IMHO its a darn good reason why it should not be posted in Tierra's forums <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o">

Na, I didn't know that the common language in SA is Dutch. I know some people that immigrate from SA to Israel, and I didn't learn this information from them.

IIRC the language spoken in South Africa is called Afrikaans, which is South African Dutch. Is that much different than the Dutch spoken in The Netherlands (mostly directed at Erpy)? I mean, is it different like British English is to American English, or Parisian French to Canadian French, or is it simply just another name for the same thing?

~Wolfgang

I'm sorry! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... rassed.gif ALT=":o">

*Recieves several whips to the back*

I'm pretty glad I didn't notice this after I downloaded KQ2VGA, but the truth is, 50% of the games I've played, I have gone though the whole game using a walkthough. And then people think, people who use walkthoughs, have they no shame!!! But honestly I like using a walkthough because I like them, I see some adventure games as a film, and I use the walkthough to do the points quickly without me solving it out myself and when I do that, play game without ever getting stuck, the game turns into a cool movie. Which I enjoy, I used a walkthough for KQ5 because I just thought that game was impossible to complete. I bet %20 of the people worldwide who completed the game, did it by them selves. This is just a guess because I'm guessing %80 actually either used the internet to find hints or phoned Sierra_Online. But when I use a walkthough, it turns out to be a cool movie IMO. So throw yellow pebbles at me if you must{starts crying} because you don't agree with me at all--SNIFF--, but remember I know that some of you may be a person like me.

Thank you.
*ORCHESTRA MUSIC*

One more word and this will be my longest thread ever. I agree that KQ5 wasn't easy. And I also agree that it DOES look like a movie if you use a walkthrough. You can compare this, for example, to Warcraft III. In this game you can always watch the *movies*, and in the beginning of every level there is this camera floating around, showing some of the commanders speak. So, if you skip the levels with cheats and watch only the camera parts (in every level) and the movie parts (once in every 4-5 levels), it looks like a movie also. I like this very much. I like the movies and stuff in Warcraft III.

And don't get me wrong about this Walkthrough issue, I just think that walkthrough should be viewed only if you are stuck more than a day or two in the same spot. And not if you are stuck for five minutes.....

I remember that I was stuck at: Space Quest II for two days before I used a walkthrough. Although I waited 2 days before using a walkthrough, I felt bad about doing so. It's like that I destroyed a part of the game.... the day I used that walkthrough for SQII, haunts me 'till today.

I'm not quite sure about WC3 yet... First off, it hardly runs on my brand new computer, but then again, I don't have a good video card yet, forcing it to take all the resources into system memory, thus creating a longer "Path", but that's besides the point. The models seem like they were done in 10 minutes. They textures are well done, but I think the game would have looked much much better 2d. Plain and simple. They tried to show off too much in this game. The trailer is just about the only thing I REALLY like about it.

----------
Sponge Factory

Afrikaans and Dutch are more different than American and British english. The pronounciation varies, there's a different grammar on many parts and also the vocabulary contains many strange words. We can understand each other pretty well though, but the other shouldn't talk too fast.

In fact, the Afrikaans is closer to the Dutch of three centuries ago than modern Dutch. The Dutch settlers on the Cape were very protective of their Dutch culture, which makes sense if you are so far from home in a hostile environment. This resulted in a very conservative society. Actually, Dutch reinforcements who arrived at the Cape, thought they entered a world a hundred years old.

The official language of South Africa is now English. Dutch is mainly spoken by the black population and in the countryside. So if Vildern has met some South Africans, the chances are that they can't speak Dutch.

In one of our many wars with the English they took the Cape Colony from us in 1814 (that's our story: we always find the best spot and then it is taken by us from the English. The Cape, New Amsterdam...). The final conquest of the country took some time and trouble. This resulted in the Boer Wars (1899-1902) between the English oppressors and the Afrikaner farmers in Transvaal and Oranje Vrijstaat. In the end the English won: a soldier always wins from a farmer. Well, almost always that is.

Some Dutch history for you. Hope you enjoyed it.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... altier0 at: 2/28/03 9:29:02 am

Walkthrough: boo! If you want to see a film, go see a film!

But seriously. If someone wants to use a walkthrough, go ahead. If that's the way you enjoy the game the most, who am I to argue?

I myself would always try to refrain from one, for the same reasons as Vildern. The game that taught me this, was King's Quest 2 (the original). I remember that when I solved KQ5 (I'm one of those 20%) my body was tingling all over. I had solved this game! I guided Graham to an happy end! It had taken me half a year (my father only allowed me to play games on sundays: ah, where did those times go?), but I did it. After I solved KQ2, using a walkthrough many times, I felt nothing. It was like I had desecrated the KQ-series which I had liked so much.

I still use walkthroughs now and then for games, but it is always the final defeat. You cannot win the game anymore after you cheated. You can see the end, but that's about it. The games I solved myself have given me infinitely more satisfaction and enjoyment a piece than all the other games I played combined.

Dutch/Afrikaans

#11 Post by Wolfgang Abenteuer » Fri Feb 28, 2003 9:30 pm

Wow...thanks for the info, Gualtier! So, the Dutch spoken in South Africa is most similar to the Dutch that was spoken in The Netherlands in about 1700, then? Interesting. I've always loved learning about languages and their origins so actually this was a very informative "lesson" if you wish to call it that. Thanks again! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

~Wolfgang

I was once like you, Wolfgang. I studied the origins of: Greek, Russian, Hebrew, Latin and more... They all are from the same origin. You'll be amazed to know how similar are the languages even though that some of them don't have words that sound alike. English and Hebrew for example. All that the modern languages have today is just a new version of things that were in the past. Nothing is new. For example: The Greek 'X' was once the Hebrew letter of: "Tav", that sounds like: "Ta". And today in English it sounds like 'Ze', so unlike 'Ta'. It is more similar to Greek, in Greek it's: 'Chi'. I have about 7 books about this issue (Spooky, huh? <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> , don't worry, I didn't buy them all).

Anyway, Erpy you were proven mistaken, the common language in SA today isn't Dutch. As was said. THAT explains why the people I know that are from SA don't know a word in Dutch.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/broyalquestfor ... That's a great walkthrough.
I was really stuck and none of the hints were helping :P
I do agree that an exact 'what to do' guide can take out all the fun of gaming, but sometimes that's just what you need.
