midi prob

#1 Post by brassfire » Thu Sep 06, 2001 2:48 am

Probably a directX prob, but I have no drop-down menus in "options". Win98SE. DirectX 7.0

What version of directX were you using? I'm kinda reluctant to update. Got my computer working perfectly, and every time I update something, something else STOPS working. :lol
(ASPI drivers were the worst for that though. Version 4.60 totally froze both my CD drives! Had to go back to 4.54 to get them working again.)

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/ubrassfire.sho ... assfire at: 9/5/01 9:53:15 pm

ooh, ooh i can answer this one! It's an AGS bug, you have to click on the menu then use the arrow keys to select what options you want.

Nice seeing you here, Brassfire <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

DirectX7 is sufficient to run the game properly, so you won't need to upgrade to DirectX8.

Frogman is right, though. The drop down windows not appearing, is a bug in AGS's setup program. You can still change the settings by clicking on them and moving through the listed options with the arrow keys. Chris Jones is also investigating this bug.

Ok. It doesn't work with the default MCI midi driver (whatever that is) and also doesn't work if I select "no midi" in the options menu. Those are the only two options... so I don't know what else to do. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":\">

The exact error is "Failed to init MIDI music driver", then the game doesn't load, and the menu disappears. I have an AWE64. I am hearing the sound on loading the menu (I presume the wav stuff is working fine), but trying to start the actual game gives that error.

I'll try it without the menu and see what happens.

EDIT: read the readme (duh!) and tried various otherconfigurations of the sound... no midi and no sound works... and I still get sound! How'd you guys do that? <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

PS: How do you EXIT the game? I had to "ctr+alt+del"!!!
Clicking exit while in the game takes you to the intro screen, and there's nothing to click there for exiting purposes. Neither "esc" or "alt+tab" worked. (Sorry, but I couldn't find that in the readme or manual. If it's there, I feel dumb...)

EDIT2: no voices though... is that because I have "no midi and no sound" checked? <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /frown.gif ALT=":(">

Thanks for the help!

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/ubrassfire.sho ... assfire at: 9/9/01 1:22:19 am

Hmmmm...

I had that problem, as well. I 'fixed' it by changing my Windows MIDI driver...

Selecting quit in the game's control panel should work; it does for me. Pressing ctrl-Q has the same effect. You might have hit the restart button instead...

Alternately, to force-quit this game, hit ctrl-alt-end .

The voices should work if you installed the voice pack (which is a seperate downlod) into the same folder as KQ1VGA. Are you sure you did that?

If so, then I guess you should just try doing what Adeyke did, by changing your Midi driver and then selecting the default options again for sound effects and music.

What I changed is under Control Panel -> Multimedia -> MIDI.
