While I'm fairly capable of deciphering that, the rest of the admins won't. Please use english while speaking on these boards.

Signed. But chances are very small that Telkom would care. Only thing that would make a difference would be a real competitor. That won't happen, since our governing body have a huge share in Telkom.

There are rumours of a competitor coming from a phone company in England. Hope it happens

Yeah.
But that rumour have been around for almost a decade, and still nothing.

01. This is our Server Provider here in South Africa www.telkomsa.net/products/adsl_telkom_internet.jsp Scroll down, then you will see our Cost Rate. (Home - DSL 192 - R270) That is the cheapest one.

02. I want to know what the Cost Rate in your Country is for the "Home" DSL you use and i want to know your Server Provider.

03. We dont have Cable or whatever it is you have, i think we have broadband.

04. I also want to see the Website from your Server Provider with the Cost Rate page.

05. In other news http://www.news24.com/Rapport/Nuus/0,,7 ... 94,00.html Sorry for it being in Afrikaans, but the Netherland/Dutch People will understand and the few South Africans around here. It appears Telkom is now bankrupt and i think we are going to pay more.

Hi all. maybe i could shed some light on the subject of telkom. I live and work in south africa and work for the biggest bee isp in the country. I can say that telkom has a lot of faults and the biggest problem is that its a monoply.check out www.hellkom.co.za
my point is for the amount of money you spend here for adsl is a huge rip off 3 gig sux. i would finish a 3 gig cap in less then a day.
my sis just got back from london and she had 2 meg at home for 30 pounds a month with a 60 gig cap for the month from bt. if you think about the home you guys cant imagin how telkom screws the isp as well

Hey, everything internet related is totally crazy in SA. For example, for a small amount of webspace (without a domain name) you'll pay about R400 (about $66) a month! And then you have to pay for the domain as an extra. (A co.za domain costs about $25 dollars a year, .com would be double that.)

That's why I simply get hosting overseas. For R200/year I get 3 times the amount of space AND a free domain name.

These guys still have to learn: The cheaper you go, the more customers you get and the more money you make. Currently only the foolish companies give them business.

I pay just about US $77 for a 2048/512 DSL with no bandwidth limits. Prices vary, though, competing ISPs will often offer DSL with lower upstream quite cheaply - however, only one other ISP is cheaper with this particular speed, and only by ~$2.50 a month. Not worth making a fuss about, since the savings would be consumed the fee that the other ISP charges to establish your connection.

The electricity company is working on a solution where a 10/10Mbit fiber connection is offered for $48 (as part of a package including IP telephony and cable TV). This is still in an early stage, though - it will not be available everywhere until 2012, although we should be due by 2008, possibly earlier.

As for hosting, I pay about US$32/year for a .dk domain, 500MB webspace, and no bandwidth fee. Eventually, I'll switch to hosting locally, though.

Deb and I currently live with her parents and as such don't pay for the broadband (well we pay £20 a month towards it) but we have a 10Mbit cable connection with unlimited bandwidth and I think it only costs £35 a month.

I think last weekend I downloaded 40GB!!

VERY

My true speed is like 400 KiloBYTES per second, so it isn't so bad!  (Considering I had 56k for a million years.)

I'm from South Africa, grew up in Germiston. I've been living in the US for 8 years now and was shocked to see the price of internet when I visited last year.

Telkom's monopoly is crippling advancements in internet connectivity in South Africa. Almost all of my friends there still use dial-up and pay a fortune for it. The only form of broadband they have is DSL which they call SDSL and it's unaffordable for the average family.

A few people I know there have successful small businesses and they can afford it. When I think that I'm only paying $15 for SBC's DSL at the moment I realize how fortunate I've been since moving to the USA. Anyway I want to sign the petition; hopefully it will make a difference.

South Africa needs some new communications companies to provide some healthy competition, but the Government is still the biggest hurdle preventing it. The South African government usually only endorses one franchise (like Telkom) in a specific field of public service (like Communications) which usually results in a monopoly and the economy suffers for it.

– My two cents, hope it helps.

Do you guys use Gigs when you have DSL.

Because when we use up our 2 or 3 or 4 gig within two weeks for example, we get cut off from the net and then we must wait till next month to come online again.

Think of a mini 56k build into DSL
