AGD1 is Embarking on a Real-Life Adventure

#1 Post by Milan Easton » Fri Nov 14, 2008 8:55 am

Hey guys,

I just wanted to let you know, the time has come. This weekend, I'm embarking on an adventure, riding my pedal bicycle from Phoenix, Arizona to Panama City, Panama. It's about 3,500 miles through 8 countries, and I'll be carrying everything on my bicycle. It'll be my home for the next four months.

My friend and I are attempting to raise money for a charity I support, which is the 100 Club. They provide financial assistance to the families of police and firefighters who are seriously injured or killed in the line-of-duty. I used to work for the police department, and spent the past year in private security as an armed guard, and it's a way for me to support the people I care about. If anyone is interested in donating, or knows of anyone who would like to donate, please do such at:

http://www.firstgiving.com/herosquest2008

All donations are tax deductible and 100% goes to the charity. My friend and I are paying for the entire adventure ourselves. We're attempting to raise $50,000 for the cause.

We have an online journal, which we've already started posting in, and will be updating it as frequently as possible with stories and pictures from our journey. You can follow along vicariously at:

You can also check our official website to find out more about the adventure itself:

Well, I won't be around much for the next four months as I make my way through the SW of the USA, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama, but I am looking forward to speaking with you all more when I get back. In the meantime, I wish you all the best!! Please do feel free to spread the word.

Yours truly,

Hi Britney;

Good luck on this journey! It sounds like a very private quest, but also like a very public one. Ambiguous. I hope you'll have fun along the way (and I don't doubt that), and raise lots of money.

I'm hoping to catch you later today, Brit. But I hope that in addition to many donations, you'll also find whatever else you're looking for. Be careful, have fun and be sure to return safe and sound.

Good luck. Hopefully you won't get arrested and end up in Sona. :D

Didn't this actually happen to you or someone else on the Himalaya Studios team? I recall reading the blogs on the old website and remember reading that someone had been arrested but it was so long ago (and I can't seem to find it) that I may have misunderstood what actually happened. If so, what was the deal with that?

That was Emmanuel, one of the Tanzanian tour-guide leaders. While we were on the island of Zanibar, he was somehow falsely accused of trying to promote businesses to foreign tourists in Stone Town (which, for some reason, is illegal in Zanzibar). He was summoned to appear in court the next day. So, we did what any sane person would do when convicted of a crime on an island being run under Islamic laws... jumped on the next ferry out of there the day before the court date!

Sounds like one hell of an adventure!

Damn being a broke-ass college senior. (Hence the Dr. Zoidberg avatar.)
