That Ring..

I flew through the game (Like falling of a bicycle, you never forget) in a handful of hours. But, I'm a few points shy of the maximum score.

someone mentioned something about a ring, and I do seem to remember an invisible ring in the original game, but can't find it in the remake.

----------
Other comments (Some Spoilers probalby).
Disclaimer: Many of these are random.

1. Wow, I'm really impressed. The game looks and feels great. Speech is also great.

2. When just starting out I ran into two bugs where I couldn't move. One was in the 'porticullis' castle screen and the second was on the ' move this rock ' screen. Porticullis forced me to restore / restart. Move this rock screen I was able to bypass by clicking the hand on the rock.

3. It took me forever to figure out how to open that walnut. I seem to remember that using the knife on it opened it in both the AGI and SCI.

4. In the original KQ1, the gnomes name was (Sometimes it is wise to think backwards):

a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z
z y x w v u t s r q p o n m l k j i h g f e d c b a

Rumplestiltskin = ifnkovhgroghprm

And then reverse that result: mrphgorghvoknfi

I know the SCI version changed that, and the remake followed the change. But, it always bugged me that they changed it.

5. I couldn't play the game in anything other than the default resolution. The disclaimer would show up, but not the Tierra animation (I could hear the music) clicking would bring me to the main screen

6. You may want to consider putting an 'exit the game' button on the main screen. After finishing the game you get sent back to the main screen, and have to either begin again or restore before you can quit.

7. F5 worked for saving a game. : woo hoo: talk about great Nostalgia. F7 didn't work for restoring though.

8. I do remember a typo in the word inventory somewhere in the docs. it sticks out because it was in a header.

9. In the original you could gain more points by giving the wood-cutter the bowl and then saying fill (I.E. feeding them forever, as opposed to just one meal). I believe the SCI removed this option. Yours (as you know) followed the SCI version.

10. Up in the land of clouds. I was able to save the game at a point where the giant was starting the 'Jump on me" animation. After I died, the restore / restart / quit buttons were grayed out (I had to force quit). Restoring to that same place produced the same results.

11. It always bothered me when the SCI version forced you to get the treasures in a specific order.

12. Phenominal job. I can't wait for Royal Quest.

13. I'm in the process of designing a computer game for a start-up computer game company, however due to my time constraints (and theirs) there does not seem to be a chance that the game will move past a 'proposal' stage. The game was supposed to sport an Ultima-style isometric view with Sierra-style puzzles.
My point here is that having put some time into developing a game myself, I'm very impressed that you were able to take the project and run with it from start to finish.

Jeff out

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub57.ezboard.com/ureboog.showPu ... >reboog at: 9/12/01 2:47:55 am

Funny how you had problems where I didn't <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":/"> ...

You get the ring from an elf. He appears randomly on the screen to the east of the cave door thing (which is two screens north of the dagger rock screen).

1. Agreed.

2. I never ran into such cannot-move bugs.

3. I think on those games, you just type "open walnut" and don't need anything else...

4. AFAIK, this game supports both versions of the gnome's name.

5. Since the game was made for 320x200, there's no way you could gain anything by raising the resolution. Just leave it be.

6. I do think a quit game button on the title screen would be a nice addition.

7. I can F7 just fine.

8. Right. Page 26.

9. I didn't know about the AGI bowl thing. You just have to give them a full bowl. They'll figure it out, I guess.

10. I've never tried saving while I was about to die. Just don't do that.

11. I think the reason behind that is that, if you already have the shield that protects you from all mortal harm, you can either just get the other things without difficulty or the shield doesn't work right. So the SCI version (and this one) simply make it so that's the last one you get.

12. Agreed.

13. Yep. Nothing gives you quite as much appreciation for something as tring to do it yourself and failing.

1. Thanks!

2. This seems to be due to some sort of bug in AGS. Some people experience the problem.. some don't. I guess the only thing you can do, is to restore a savegame if it happens.

4. Yep, you can spell the gnome's name both ways.

5. What Adeyke said.

6. You can press CTRL & Q at the title screen to quit the game.

8. Thanks. I'll fix that.

10. What adeyke said again

12. Thanks again! It's getting there!

13. I'd suggest that you just keep working at it. Even in your spare time.. make the decision not to quit... a game won't make itself<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

10. Happens to me too. Basically if you save while in the giants screen and then the giant happens to kill you. Then you cannot restore/restart/quit. The buttons are grayed out. The only option was to kill the program using task manager.

14. I have this strange bug sometimes, that when i click on the edge of the screen, Graham starts moving in the opposite direction.

I believe the bug you are referring to isn't really a bug. It has to do with the pathfinding program in AGS. From what I've heard from the AGD's, this has been fixed in recent versions of AGS and will be fixed in KQ1VGA version 3.0. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, however...

~Wolfgang

A "Quit" button at the title screen would be great, IMO.

Also, yes, I have noticed the typo in the manual. Iventory, was it? It gave me a brief chuckle the first time I saw it...

The ring inscription from Lord of the rings? (As a joke in reference to the thread's title.. "That ring", I'm guessing)
